  • Expedia, Inc. is the world’s largest online travel company, operating in a highly competitive real-time business environment. Initially they purchased Splunk for IT infrastructure monitoring and troubleshooting. As with many of our customers, Splunk has enabled them to dramatically reduce downtime and troubleshoot issues faster. This has translated directly into increased revenues.  After a series of upgrades and expansions, they are now sending virtually all their IT and website data---about -6 TB per day--- into Splunk.  Now, over 1600 employees across IT, Marketing, App Dev, and Security are using Splunk as an enterprise solution. Newer use cases for Splunk include web intelligence and online marketing optimization. Splunk has also enabled them to retire 20 different tools and saved millions of dollars in server and database infrastructure.  Expedia reports that they have achieved an ROI of over $10M per year, in their first year of using Splunk.
  • With more than 100,000 customers, salesforce.com is leading the shift to the social enterprise.  Salesforce found that they had limited visibility and slow response to inbound customer calls. The support team relied on a legacy log mining system that took hours to run queries.  With Splunk, Salesforce indexes more than 1TB per day across multiple datacenters from the entire cloud stack - including application servers, web servers and email servers. With Splunk Salesforce has decreased the time to troubleshoot support issues by more than 90%.  They have now expanded their usage, including capacity planning, and the product managers for Chatter are analyzing customer patterns to improve the user experience.
  • Problem: With over 5 million subscribers and annual growth rates of 10-20%, Cricket Communications has rapidly become a leading US-based provider of “no signed contracts, no limits” mobile cellular phone services (including voice, text, broadband and data). Cricket Communications regularly handles 3,000 new subscriber requests per hour – about 50 activations per minute. In order to keep up with this tremendous demand for its trademark services, Cricket Communications automated its order processing system and workflows, eliminating manually introduced errors. However, the carrier soon discovered that all its complex applications and systems needed to work without fail in order to keep the flow of orders going. If any part or subsystem experienced a failure or degradation, the whole system would quickly come to a grinding halt. Solution: Cricket Communications deployed Splunk to quickly detect and analyze system performance issues. Using proactive triggers to send alerts from Splunk, the carrier has been able to address problems before they escalate to their event management team. The Applications Operations team calculated that with Splunk in place, they have reduced outage frequency by about 15%, translating into an annual positive revenue protection impact of $1,200,000. The team also gained new operational efficiencies using Splunk and as a result was able to reassign one Full Time Employee (an approximate savings of $100,000) to other tasks. Lastly, by loading log data into Splunk and creating relevant executive dashboards, the company was also able to start looking at business trends on activations, cancellations and other critical business metrics.   • Intuit, the leader in online financial services, serves over 4 million customers with internet banking, tax planning, and mortgage offering.  The Security team started using Splunk to identify cyber-attacks and fraudulent wire transfer attempts. They have already identified and prevented several million dollars of fraudulent wire transfer attempts. Intuit is also using Splunk in several other business units like their online Turbotax service, including Operations, Customer Service, Security and Fraud teams. Most recently they have started using Splunk for web analytics –such as intra-page analytics, site speed and customer search behavior.
  • As one of the world’s largest e-retailers, U.K.– based Tesco.com handles over 400K online orders per week.  With so many transactions, uptime and customer satisfaction throughout the ordering process are a critical metric for the organization. Tesco started using Splunk for order tracking and for monitoring their website performance.  Tesco monitors 400 servers in 10 different locations, indexing more than 50 different types of machine data. They have now expanded their uses in two ways – their developers are using Splunk to understand the impact of code changes to their infrastructure, and they are to tracking their customer usage patterns to drive a better shopping experience.A good example of a customer expanding their usage from order tracking to overall business performance.
  • MetroPCS is a top-ranked, rapidly expanding provider of flat-rate/no contract wireless communications services. They needed to gain greater visibility into its machine data in order to optimize margins as well as detect abuse.  Since they charge their customers a flat rate, visibility into call patterns is critical. the carrier wanted to determine the lowest-cost route for calls, in order to attain higher margins and profits.  MetroPCS is using Splunk to index about 1TB per day of cell calls - generated by their telecom equipment – to understand usage patterns and how to efficiently deliver volume traffic through their international carrier partners. They also compute rate information from their business systems to get real time views of revenue and expense analysis. With Splunk, MetroPCS is saving more than $1M per year.
  • Splunk enables you to integrate external data sources at search time. For example, correlate external business data to IT data, run computations and discover new intelligence. This example is based on a low-cost long distance telecoms company, where multiple carrier partners exist to route calls to a destination. In this real-world example, Splunk performs an external lookup of partner tariffs from an external RDBMS and calculates the partner carrier fee for using their network based on actual call detail records. Performing this at search times helps mitigate risk in a variable pricing environment, where tariffs may change frequently. By doing this, Splunk is able to pinpoint the lowest-cost partners for a specific customers destination, enabling the telecoms company to optimize their partnerships and consequently revenue. This is one of many use cases of Splunk correlating business and IT data to help optimize the business. Another is providing dashboard visibility into Average Revenue Per User (ARPU), an important KPI for telecoms businesses.The Splunk solution in this particular example took 1 week, whereas traditional approaches to this problem were taking many weeks without success – with Splunk, there is no need to write database queries, or buy expensive reporting packages to query/report or visualize your data. At a time when the business is demanding more from IT at lower cost, Splunk provides a fast, flexible way to unlock powerful new intelligence from your business and IT data.
