  • 5. It’s when someone thinks they’re getting a positive reaction after taking medically ineffectual treatment. It’s a fake, simulated effect created by the human brain.

  • 7. Consider this. More people buy Nurofen for £4 than ‘own brand’ painkillers that cost 50p.
  • 8. Yet the active ingredient in all painkillers is exactly the same. So why is Nurofen selling better?
  • 9. Because Nurofen brand their product more effectively. Everything with their product has been thought through very carefully - from the colour of the pills through to the words on the packet.
  • 10. In particular, the words are there to convince any type of customer. What kind of treatment do you want? Long-lasting? Fast-acting?
  • 11. Essentially, people think they’re going to get better quicker with Nurofen than if they use something else. That’s the power of branding. That’s the power of words.
