What is copywriting?

Copywriting.
What is it?
In a nutshell…
It’s the act of writing copy to sell or market a
product, business or idea.
And copywriters?
We’re creative thinkers. We’re writers, but
not just any old writers.
We’re concise and professional.
We’re into sales.
But in a good way.
Our words deliver revenue, so we can make
or break businesses.
We’re storytellers.
We’re able to communicate ideas clearly, but
in a catchy, memorable way.
What about the words
we choose?
When the right words are together, they look
good, sound good and feel good.
That’s why copywriting is an investment,
not an expense.
It’s not about grammar and apostrophes…
just words.
It’s about getting all the right words in all
the right places.
It’s about engaging with customers and
creating emotion.
Words can make or break an ad, website or
reputation.
Words communicate messages, products
and services.
They also build brands.
Copywriters motivate people. The best
brands don’t need to describe themselves.
What about pictures?
The right words are words that work with
images.
Don’t forget, less is more. Sometimes it’s
about removing words, not adding them.
“An ad is finished only when you no longer
can find a single element to remove.”
Robert Fleege
Tell it like it is.
Copywriters say what they mean and mean
what they say.
“Advertising should say:‘Here’s what we’ve
got. Here’s what it will do for you. Here’s
how to get it.’”
Leo Burnett
What copywriting isn’t…
It isn’t about following rules or going back to
school.
Have fun with words.
Use an active, colourful
voice.
Grammar is important,
but making writing
colourful is
even more so.
Some good advice.
“Nobody reads ads. People read what
interests them. Sometimes its an ad.”
Howard Gossage
“Make it simple. Make it memorable. Make
it inviting to look at. Make it fun to read.”
Leo Burnett
