  3. Slide 3: First……..  For office cabling it must first be determined what exactly you need in terms of the uses for structured cabling. • Do you need cabling for voice and do you require cabling for data? • Do you use the internet in your business, as most do today? • How many computers are in your network? If there is more than one, it will require a network, with a server and properly ventilated server room, in order for the network computers to work together and give you efficiency in the work place. • You may require video and data in a conference room, and this will determine also the type of cabling installation you require. For various applications, there are several types of data cabling to fit the requirements. SouthernCalCCTV.com
  4. Slide 4: Second….. Not all cabling is alike. For telephone usage, a Cat (or category) 3 is common. But for data usage, you require another category of cabling Cat5 or Cat6. SouthernCalCCTV.com
  5. Slide 5: Third…… • The type of cabling for structured wiring in your business varies in on of itself. It’s important to consider what you can afford now, but also to consider if it will be sufficient with room to grow. • It’s logical to purchase the most you can afford now, rather than have to restructure and expend more costs later with an upgrade. • Remember that technology is always growing. - Cat 3 is used for the Ethernet application and carries Data to 10 Mbps. - Cat 4 will carry data to 20 Mbps (16 Mbps Token Ring), which is faster - But a Cat 5 for fast Ethernet carries up to 100 Mbps. • Both Category 3 and Category 5 have a maximum segment length of 100 meters. Cat 5E cable is an enhanced version of Cat 5 that adds specifications for far end crosstalk, and has superseded Cat 5 specification. Cat 5E. • In addition to Ethernet, it is also used to carry a number of other signals such as basic voice). • Category 6 is used for gigabit connections. The cable contains four twisted copper wire pairs, just like earlier copper cable standards and is backward compatible with the Cat 3 and Cat 5/5e cable standards. SouthernCalCCTV.com
  6. Slide 6: Forth • Consider Plenum versus non-Plenum. - Plenum Cabling is structured cabling permitted - under building codes for plenum spaces. • Plenum rated cable has fire-resistant & slow burning casing that emits very little smoke. • The space between the structural ceiling and the raised floor or under a dropped ceiling is usually considered plenum. • The plenum space is typically used to house communication cables for a buildings telephone and computer network, and allows for a cooling and ventilated environment. • No high-voltage powered equipment is allowed to be placed in a plenum space. Make sure to check building codes with your building manager SouthernCalCCTV.com
  7. Slide 7: Finally Fifth when consider all the options and requirements to fit your structured cabling needs, in order to have adequate office wiring, the best results for the future growth of your business is to utilize cabling installation for data and voice applications at one time, rather than over a series of installations, which will cut your costs.
