Strategic innovation has the potentialto take small companies and elevate them to industry leadership status. And it can allownewcomers to take established industry leaders and destroy them in a short period oftime. It sounds wonderful but it’s also very difficult to achieve. How exactly can a companydevelop such a differentiated strategy? And how can it implement it successfully? Behind every successful strategy, there are a few simple but fundamental principles.Strategy is all about making difficult choices of what to do and, more importantly, what notto do. These choices are about three things: Who shall we target as customers; What shallwe offer these customers; and How can we play the game in this industry. These are noteasy choices to make but a company needs to make them. Simple as this may sound, theworst strategic mistake that we see in practice is company after company failing to makethese choices. These choices must be creative enough to allow a firm to differentiate itself from itscompetitors. A strategy that lacks creativity is useless. Your goal must be to analyse themarket and then identify a unique position for your company. You will achieve uniquenessby: (a) targeting different customers from those that other competitors target; (b) offeringproducts and services that are substantially different from those of competitors; and (c)delivering value to the customer in a different way.Even the best of strategies will fail unless they are supported by the appropriateorganisation environment. This consists of the incentives, the structures and processesand the culture that the organisation puts in place.Strategy must not only be communicated to everybody in a company but moreimportantly, it must be “sold” to people so as to win their emotional commitment towardsthis strategy.Strategy must remain flexible enough so as to adjust to the never-ending changes in theoutside environment. Flexibility cannot be dictated—it must become part of the fabric ofthe organisation. Professor Markides will first use practical examples and interactive exercises to highlighteach principle. After making these points, he will explore how to develop and implementsuch a differentiated strategy.07.30 Registration And Morning Coffee08.15 Opening Remarks From The Chairman Edy Abou Chakra, Partner, ADDIMA Consulting, UK, KSA and LebanonWhat People Say About Costas Markides:“ Costas Markides was truly inspiring! … Hefocused on the little changes that we caneasily and effectively make rather than bigpicture and hypothetical changes.”“ Very, very interesting to hear Markides’thoughts on how to make a team effort asuccess and how to promote innovation inour companies.  He gave us lots of ideas tothink about.”Costas Markides is Professor of Strategy andEntrepreneurship and holds the Robert P.
