    To clarify, that statement about avoiding the 1st person was about Section A of the exam, the text response. By all means students should use 1st person in Section B, especially if appropriate to their chosen form and purpose.

    Useful and sensible tips. I’m not convinced that the first person has to be avoided in part B.

    Looks to me as though these tips would be useful for senior English exams around the country.

    • Practice not writing
    • You can only be assessed on your response (not plans or ‘written explanation’)
  3. Approaching Reading time
    • Be strategic
    • Section A: What jumps out? Opportunities
    • Section B: Read & reflect on the context prompt
    • Read and “ listen” to the unseen material for the Section C writing task

    • Audience awareness
      • They know the text well - don’t retell
      • They are teachers - use formal language
      • They are trying to give you marks - let them
      • Avoid 1st person - the examiner doesn’t know you, or want to know what you think!

      • Weave into statements
      • Links to text and relevance is essential
      • Salt & pepper
