Creative Ely: Give it your best shot

Published on

Creative Ely, 5th March 2013
The Cutter, Ely, Cambridgeshire UK

An idea inspired by The Guardian's My Best Shot, which features photographers talking through their best picture: the back story, the composition and why it's so close to their hearts.

With so many members of Creative Ely having an interest in photography - whether amateur or professional - we wanted to run an evening where everyone could contribute.

With photographer and Creative Ely member Dean Ireland acting as host, we showed the images and invited the people who took them to talk them through.

  • Jonathan Wainwright: Ely Eclipse
  • Christine Wood: Modern Tate
  • Liz WainwrightI’m very much an amateur, but this really tickled me – and luckily I had a camera in my handbag (albeit not set up correctly)! Who’d have thought an artificial Christmas tree (OK, I know it didn’t last!!) could have looked so out of place on such a blue sky, sunny day??

  • Stephen ShawPlease find attached my photograph for the creative Ely meeting on the 5th March.I look forward to telling the story behind it then. It was taken in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.I look forward to seeing you.
  • Dean IrelandOk if we go with the one of my better half, Angela, in her blue dress with her hands round her knees then that'll be great. Not technically my best work but There's a good reason I like it and it's probably a pivotal image for me.

  • Nik SargentIs it too late to send an entry for the photo night? I'm thinking I may submit this one as it has a few interesting (hopefully) things to say about it.
  • Sue KeoghSon standing in the ruins of Whitby AbbeyLike the composition of it, the balance between different heights the fact that the iPhone doesn’t give loads of detail, actually works in this photo’s favour can’t tell it’s Whitby, looks more like a little urchin who’d be better off up a chimney
  • Rebecca GunnI realize I'm an hour late but mulled over my photos and tried to pick the best one! I'm no photography expert but I'm proud of a few pictures and people seem to like the way Old and New complement each other in this photo I took of Toronto.
  • Emily PaxtonHere is one of my nature shots taken recently and locally. I love the vivid colours and the rare capture of the pheasant amoungst the rape. My portfolio is very eclectic with loads of portraiture and urban photography so it was hard to select just one to define my style. I will bring my printed portfolio along as it will be nice to show off my range of work to other photographers' and of course creative enthusiasts in Ely. You shoudl also be aware that I am collaborating with Dean at his studio tomorrow night and we are going to try and shoot more weddings togther. Hopefully we can plug this on the 5th.See you thereEmily x
  • Helena AndersonI attach my photo, 'Heart Break Hotel', for the 'give it your best shot' evening on 5 March.I have chosen a fun shot and am interested to hear what others have to say about it.It's a scene I did for these two young actresses, Juliette Burton (right) and Lizzie Mace, andthe photos were used for the publicity of their new comedy play, 'Heart Break Hotel', which they premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last August (that's my bed!).Nikon D700ISO 40050mm focal lengthf/5.61/60flash usedplus extra lights
