• 2. A big “Howdy” from SolarWinds
based in Austin, Texas
Josh Stephens - Head Geek, Monster Blogger, Constant Tweeter
Brandon Shopp – Senior Product Manager, Orion NPM
Today’s Topic: Orion NPM Customer Training – Level 1, Part 1
Who is SolarWinds?
Dude, if you don’t’ know this
you’re on the wrong webcast…
Introduction
• 3. Housekeeping

Can you hear me now?
 • 4. If not, use the GoToWebinar chat or Q&A panel to let us know.
 • 5. How do you win the free stuff?
 • 6. How do you ask questions and when?
 • 7. Will this thing be recorded?
 • 8. If you don’t have a notebook, get one…
 • 9. Ask lots of questions – Today’s

feedback will drive part #2.
• 10. Agenda
Goals for today’s training session
Understanding the Orion architecture
Building systems to host Orion
Managing the Network
Where to Learn More and Q&A
• 11. Goals for today’s training session
By the end of this session you should be able to:
Understand Orion’s architecture
Build and optimize a system for running Orion
Install and configure Orion
Begin using Orion to monitor network health
• 12. Objective #1 – Understand Orion’s Architecture
Orion has 3 main sets of components
Orion’s data collection engines
Orion’s website and web services
Orion’s data stores
• 13. Orion’s Data Collection Engines
Orion Polling Service
Leverages SNMP and ICMP
Collects general Orion data (status, response time, interface stats, etc)
Polling based
Orion Syslog and Trap Services
Receive, store, and alert on Syslog and SNMP Trap messages
Listening based
Orion Universal Device Poller (UnDP)
Used SNMP to collect customizable information from devices
Can collect from “any MIB”

Orion Job Engine

Used by Orion NPM (wireless) and modules for data collection
Leverages several different management protocols
• 14. Orion’s Website and Web Services
Orion Web Site
Hosted within IIS
Primarily ASP.NET based
Can be installed on a separate machine (Orion Web Console)
Provides the primary UI for Orion
Orion Web Services
Hosted within IIS
Used by internal Orion components for communications
Used to connect Orion to distributed components (EOC for instance)
• 15. Orion’s Database
Orion NPM’s Database
Leverages Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or 2008
Recommended that production versions run full copy of SQL on a separate machine
Doesn’t usually require a dedicated SQL Server
If you’re not sure, just pick the standard installation options and you can always change it later
The Orion database server is typically the most important component in determining performance of the Orion system.
• 16. Orion Architecture
Advanced Alert Engine
SystemManager
NetPerfmon
Service
DCOM
ICMPSNMP
Reporting
SNMP Trap Service
SNMP
NetPerfmonDB
Syslog
Syslog
Service
ASP.NetWeb Site
SNMP
WCF
Job Engine
SNMP Poller
Core Services
WCF
Discovery
Information Service
Network Atlas
10
• 17. SCP Question #1
The first 5 correct answers get a free SolarWinds t-shirt
A router monitored by Orion NPM reboots, and the interface indexes change. How does Orion handle this event?
A. Orion uses internal ID numbers rather than relying on the interface indexes.
B. Interface indexes must be manually updated using Web Node Management.
C. Interface indexes are automatically updated by the Orion scheduled rediscovery process.
D. Interface indexes are automatically updated by re-running Orion Network Discovery.
• 19. Objective #2 - Building Systems to Host Orion
The first step – assessing your environment
How many nodes and interfaces will you be polling and how do you figure this out?
What are your requirements for polling frequency and how do you determine them?
Which additional modules will you be using and what if you don’t know?
If using additional modules, how many elements will they be managing?
Do you have decommissioned server (old HPOV servers for instance) that you can re-use for this deployment?
If you need to deploy on sub-optimal hardware, rollout a phased management approach.
• 20. Building Systems to Host Orion
The Orion Server
Can you leverage a separate SQL Server?
If so, just do it.
If so, consider deploying Orion on a virtual server.
If not, build a plan to migrate there.
Advantages of deploying Orion on a virtual server
Easy backups and restores
Built-in redundancy with VMotion
Lowered hardware and datacenter costs
• 21. Building Systems to Host Orion
Orion’s SQL Server
The more RAM the better
64-bit systems rock
Be wary of SANs/NAS
RAID 5 is OK for OS and Apps but not for data storage – use RAID 1,0

Best practices for improving SQL Server performance

64-bit systems allow use of more RAM
SANs can be used but must be tuned for high volumes of small IO transactions – i.e. latency is the key
RAID 1,0 offers the best IO performance
Use disk controllers with at least 256 MB of battery backed-up write back cache
Put the SQL data files and log files on separate disk controllers or at least separate channels
Leverage tools like RAMDisk for better SQL performance
Ask for your DBAs help – this is their area of expertise
• 22. Building Systems to Host Orion

Obviously, don’t forget the documented system requirements…

Investigating Orion’s Health
Are the polling engines keeping up?
Do the charts have holes in them that don’t correspond to downtime?
Does the CPU on the Orion server stay fully loaded all the time?
Are there errors in the Orion event logs?
Is the polling cycle completing?
Is database maintenance running correctly?

Is the Orion website running as well as it should?

Consider the data required for the displayed web resources
Can you move some of these to less often displayed views?
Network wide resources take a lot of resources to display
Think through the value of the data that you’re presenting
• 23. Investigating Orion’s Health
Is SQL Server slowing things down?
Check read and write disk queue lengths
Microsoft recommends that they stay less than 2X the number of disk spindles you have within the system
Are there errors in the Orion event log or are there SQL timeouts?
• 24. SCP Question #2
The first 5 correct answers get a free SolarWinds t-shirt
An Orion NPM administrator needs to customize the Orion Web Console to reflect the company's name and image.Which action accomplishes this?
A. use the Custom Property Editor to group nodes by location names
B. use the Web Console settings to change the banner logo and site text
C. use Map Maker to portray company images and branding
D. use Manage Views to add custom HTML resources
