SolarWinds Application Performance Monitor (APM) is now Server & Application Monitor (SAM).

For more information on Server & Application Monitor (APM), visit: http://www.solarwinds.com/server-application-monitor.aspx

Watch this webcast: http://www.solarwinds.com/resources/webcasts/part-2-advanced-tactics-for-application---system-management.html

In Part 1, we discussed the different management protocols and methods that are used to manage, monitor, and measure application and system health and performance.

During Part 2 we’ll dive deeper into some of these technologies and demonstrate how they are commonly used within management applications. Specifically, we’ll be discussing:

• Leveraging RPC and WMI to monitor Windows PerfMon counters & statistics
• Using user experience monitors and synthetic transactions to validate application availability and response time
• Integrating NetFlow statistics to enhance visibility of application usage and performance

We’ll be leveraging the SolarWinds Application Performance Monitor (APM) among other tools to demonstrate these technologies and facilitate the discussions. Additionally, we’ll be taking questions from the audience and having additional discussions based upon attendee response.

      • Application and system monitoring technologies
      • Polling technologies for PerfMon
      • Modeling the user experience
      • Best practices for applying these technologies
      • Criteria for choosing monitoring tools
      • Summary and Q&A
    • Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)
      • Benefits
        • Access to a lot of MS server data, highly extensible
      • Issues
        • Slow, 150ms responses are common
        • Scales poorly
        • Reliance on DCOM
        • Moving target, DCOM and WMI security changes are common
        • Troubleshooting can be very complicated
    • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
      • Benefits
        • Fast, single digit millisecond response
        • Scales well, no DCOM connections limits
        • Returns thousands of polls quickly and efficiently, less load on poller and node
        • Less complicated than WMI
    • Polling reads counters for application activity
    • User experience monitors create active application tests by emulating a user transaction
    • APM server can poll SQL counters
    • SQL User Experience Monitor Shows Actual Failure
    • Who is using the server?
    • Are there bottlenecks between the users and server?
    • NetFlow
      • Identify Top N users and conversations on the SQL server
      • Is there something taxing the SQL server that does not need to be running queries now?
      • Are the WAN links to the SQL server saturated due to unnecessary traffic?
    • What does access to this server look like network-wide?
    • Are there network service failures causiung an app issue?
    • IP SLA
      • Ensure the SQL server availability from multiple locations
      • Look for related problems such as DNS issues

    • Choose something you can see an ROI from today…
    • Use RPC data collection where possible, especially when you need to collect many counters
    • Make sure you are getting the complete picture. Don’t just monitor the app and server – use NetFlow and IP SLA.
