Slavery<br />Began from 1760 BC<br />The maritime town of Lagos, Portugal, was the first slave market created for the sale of imported African slaves.<br />Most of the slaves were brought from Mauritania.<br />Whites from Southern State traditionally bought and owned black slaves.<br />Slaves had to follow everything that is commanded by the owner<br />
Slavery<br />In relation with To Kill a mockingbird:<br /> - Both discriminated the Blacks<br /> - In the novel, Blacks are always wrongly accused though they are innocent<br /> - Blacks have to obey the owner’s command, if not, they will be tortured.<br />
The Civil War<br />Southern States:<br /> - Texas, Florida, Georgia, Washington DC, Maryland<br />Lincoln called for troops to proclaim war against the Southern States<br /> - To allow the Blacks to have their own rights <br />The war lasted for 4 years from 1961- 1965<br />
The Civil War<br />Cause of the war <br /> - The South had lost control of Congress, and was no longer able to silence calls for an end to slavery<br /> - Northern State destroyed Slavery completely<br />

The Civil Rights Movement<br />Began in 1950<br />Every citizen has the same rights by law, practical issues of discrimination remained.<br /> African-American Civil Rights Movement<br /> - Black Christian leaders and their white allies joined together to challenge the immoral system of racial segregation.<br />Chicano Movement <br /> - Encompassed a broad cross section of issues—Education, political rights, etc.<br />
