Presentation Objectives Help system and software testers or test and evaluation (T&E) staff determine the overall test (or T&E) strategy for development or modification of a software-intensive system Help project stakeholders (particularly customers and senior management) review and approve the test strategy Help testers or systems and software analysts determine: – Test objectives, or – Qualification requirements, or – Verification and validation (V&V) criteria 2

Dangerous Assumptions In this world of acquisition reform, it is dangerous to assume that we know the policies that we must follow without identifying and reviewing them at the start of each project. What DoD, service, command, department or organizational policies, instructions, and regulations are applicable on your project? What information regarding your “test strategy” is in the contract, statement of work, requirements, or project plans? Don’t assume you know unless you look! 4

  7. 7. Purpose of a Test Strategy Why should we develop a test strategy? Before we develop test cases and test procedures to test a system, we should define an overall test or test and evaluation strategy – To obtain consensus of goals and objectives from stakeholders (e.g., management, developers, testers, customers, users) – To manage expectations from the beginning – To be sure we’re “headed in the right direction” – Identifies the types of tests to be conducted at all test levels (continued) 7

Purpose of a Test Strategy (continued) It always happens either formally or informally – So we just as well be clear on what our objectives are, i.e., let’s document our strategy Formal (documented / reviewed / approved) is the most effective mechanism to get early agreement on goals and objectives Usually addresses human system integration factors (usability) Addresses interoperability if not a stand-alone system Developed by one or a few of the most knowledgeable people over a relatively short period of time [DAIC02] 8

Contents of a Test Strategy A test strategy provides an overall perspective of testing, and identifies or references: – Project plans, risks, and requirements – Relevant regulations, policies, or directives – Required processes, standards, and templates – Supporting guidelines – Stakeholders and their test objectives – Test resources and estimates – Test levels and phases – Test environment – Completion criteria for each phase – Required test documentation and review methods 12

Test Objectives and Priorities Find defects [MYER79] Since you can’t test a program completely – Test important features and capabilities first – Test where you’re more likely to find defects – Test to software integrity level [IEEE 1012] Should know the overall objective of testing and the objective of every planned test case – Test case design techniques help us systematically meet our objectives and cover our concerns Test objectives are our requirements for testing – Determine functional coverage, quality, range of tests, risks, constraints, required standards [DAIC02] 13

Where to Document the Test Strategy Can be documented in the: – Project Plan - see IEEE 12207.1 – Software Quality Assurance Plan - see IEEE 730 – System Verification and Validation Plan - see IEEE 1012 – Test Plan - see IEEE 12207.0, and IEEE 12207.1 – Test and Evaluation Master Plan (TEMP) - see DoD 5000.2-R [DAIC02] 14

  20. 20. Questions Does your project have an overarching test strategy? What software and system test levels apply on your project? What completion (exit) criteria apply prior to your phase or level of testing and are they met? The best idea might not be to eliminate the requirement for a Test and Evaluation Master Plan (TEMP) or Master Test Plan (MTP) 20

Pitfalls Undocumented test strategies or test strategies that are not reviewed and approved by stakeholders – “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!” Empty test strategies – See “Contents of a Test Strategy” slide 12) Test strategies with stated but unfulfilled test objectives – Often, no review is conducted to determine if tests meet test objectives 21
  22. 22. Pitfalls “Exploratory Testing” Quandary To document or not to document. That is the question... – Exploratory Testing is “test design and test execution at the same time” [BACH02] – Exploratory Testing is ad hoc / inspirational testing “I'm starting to suspect that there are nearly as many exploratory testing techniques as there are exploratory testers” [BLAC02] – What constitutes an “exploratory testing” test case? Pitfalls “Exploratory Testing” Quandary (continued) – Recommendations: Still need to document the test strategy Document complex, high-risk test cases – My experience has shown that the “exploratory testing” tests will then be more systematic and rigorous Determine the objective for each test case – Determine when each test case starts and ends – Keep things simple – Each item verified should support the test objective – Count the number of test cases Identify specific inputs Predict expected results Evaluate actual results Monitor requirements coverage 23

Conclusions Develop effective test strategies that help organizations meet project objectives Review test strategies against content and criteria advocated in this presentation Consider the Theory of Constraints (TOC) Conflict Resolution Diagram (a.k.a. the Evaporating Cloud) for resolving problems (disagreements) 24

Definitions “Test” – Glen Myers said back in 1979 in his book The Art of Software Testing, “Testing is the process of executing a program or system with the intent of finding errors.” [MYER79] – This paved the way for significant improvements to testing in many organizations. “The process of operating a system or component under specified conditions, observing or recording the results, and making an evaluation of some aspect of the system or component.” [IEEE 610] return return 25

Definitions “Test and Evaluation (T&E)” – “The act of generating empirical data during the research, development or sustainment of systems, and the creation of information through analysis that is useful to technical personnel and decision makers for reducing design and acquisition risks. The process by which systems are measured against requirements and specifications, and the results analyzed so as to gauge progress and provide feedback.” [AFI 99-103] (draft) – “The T&E process is based on the scientific method and the principle of “predict - test - compare,” and is the foundation for all Air Force test planning and execution.” [AFI 99-103] (draft) (continued) 26
  27. 27. Definitions Scientific Method Includes 5 Steps: “1. Some aspect of the universe. 2. Invent a tentative description, called a hypothesis, that is consistent with what you have observed. 3. Use the hypothesis to make predictions. 4. Test those predictions by experiments or further observations and modify the hypothesis in the light of your results. 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until there are no discrepancies between theory and experiment and/or observations.” [WUDK98] 27

Definitions “Developmental Test and Evaluation” – “Any engineering-type test used to verify status of technical progress, verify that design risks are minimized, substantiate achievement of contract technical performance, and certify readiness for initial operational testing. Development tests generally require instrumentation and measurements and are accomplished by engineers, technicians, or soldier operator-maintainer test personnel in a controlled environment to facilitate failure analysis.” [DSMCGlossary] (continued) 29
