  • 4. What is Twitter?
    • Twitter is a free social networking and micro blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets.
    • Originally designed as a short message service (SMS) by Jack Dorsey.
  • 5. There are over 200 million registered Twitter accounts
  • 6. Twitter Stats 2011
    • 30% of online adults use Twitter
    • 95% of Twitter users own a mobile phone, and half of these users access the service on their handheld device.
  • 7. Why do so many people use Twitter?
    • Networking
    • Stay connected
    • Breaking news
    • Live event reporting
    • Branding themselves or product/service
    • Celebrity
  • 8.   Twitter  Terminology 
    • Tweet - When you post or write your 140 characters on twitter and hit send it’s called a tweet or tweeting
    • Retweet – this is a tactic of republishing someone else’s tweet – the original tweet along with author stays intact – many people find this a great way to add content and acknowledge good stuff from the folks they follow
    • Hash tag – this is a way people categorize tweets so that others might use the same tag and effectively create a way for people to view related tweets – it will something like #marketing

    • Interesting things to read – Check out this article on work life balance from @usatoday http://is.gd/5429
    • Inspiring thoughts: Remember you have the ability to make your dreams come true!
    • Professional news The Washington Post included my business as one of the top environmental pet stores in the metro area.
    • Work details – It’s hard to entrust work to others, and yet so rewarding when they come back with great results. I need to delegate more!
    • Business issues and challenges What is the best way for me to hire a new employee without spending a lot of money?
    • Family life details Excited for my daughter who made the varsity soccer team as a freshman!
  • 10. Tweet
    • Twitter allows users to post 140 character messages or “Tweet” to a group of followers. Tweets can include links, pictures and videos.
    • Followers are people who follow your posts and are interested in what you have to say.
  • 11. Handle
    • That’s your twitter name @sociallyahead – balance short with descriptive and no matter what your handle is get your personal name if you can even if you don’t plan to use it right now.
  • 12. Direct Message or DM
    • This is a message that is sent directly to another user. They must be following you for you to DM them
  • 13. Re-tweet or RT
    • This is a tactic of republishing someone else’s tweet – the original tweet along with author stays intact
    • Many people find this a great way to add content and acknowledge good stuff from the folks they follow
  • 14. Replies
    • This is what it is called when someone writes a tweet directly at your handle
    • Example: @sociallyahead cool post today blah blah
    • this is often an invite to engage with a follower.
  • 15. Follow
    • This is simply the act of adding someone to your list of people you are following – this makes their tweets show up on your homepage.

  • 17. Useful Twitter Tools
    • Tweet Deck - As mentioned above, tweet deck can operate a bit like your desktop dashboard to help you set-up searches for key terms and respond directly.
    • Hoot Suite - Hoot Suite does a number of things, but for support one of the biggest tools is the ability to manage multiple accounts so you can easily jump back and forth from your personal account to the brand support account.
    • Twitter Feed - http://twitterfeed.com/ - this application allows you to feed any RSS feed into a twitter account – use wisely, you can send too much content that turns followers off with this tool .

    • Leaving your account dormant
    • Not engaging your audience
    • Tweeting too much
    • Being a Twitter snob
  • 19. Not enough space? Use URL Shortner
    • URL shorters reduce the web address and create a static link.
    • For example: http://www.sociallyahead.com can be shortned to http://db.lz/9202
    • Common URL shortners include:
    • Ow.ly
    • Bit.ly
    • Tiny.cc

    • Select a unique handle
    • Fill out basic information so people know what to expect from your tweets
  • 25. What’s Next
    • Locate some people to follow
    • You can search for people you already know by searching names as well as importing your e-mail list.
    • There are various ways you can find people who share similar interests
      • Search your interests at Twitter search
      • Twitter directories such as WeFollow
  • 26. Read Tweets
    • Now that you have selected some people to follow, every post they make will appear on your feed
    • See someone talking rubbish? No problem you can simply unfollow them.
  • 27. Post Tweets
    • Now it’s time for your contribution
    • Share what you want with the world and if what you put is interesting to someone they will start following you.
    • Have a link you want to share? Use a shortner like bit.ly or tinyurl.com so you don’t go over your 140 limit
  • 28. Reply to Tweet
    • You can reply to any tweet you see posted on Twitter by simply hitting the reply button.
    • Remember your reply is public!
  • 29. Re-tweet / RT
    • See a tweet you like and you would like to tweet to your followers. Simply RT
