  1. Magazine analysis
  2. Kerrang magazine
  3. The splash image is five different images, taken in a studio setting, which have been put together to create the main splash image. The splash image was taken in a studio and has Mark Hoppus on the front who is hosting the official rock 100 which is the main focus point of the magazine, behind him are some of the other acts which will be on it so it reinforces the main article. This may also make other people want to buy the magazine as one of their favourite artists are on the splash image. One of the sub headings announces that there is a “massive poster pull-out” inside the magazine which is written in yellow and white which stand out on the red background. It also has images of what is on the poster so the audience will see what they are getting which will make them more likely to buy it as there is a higher chance of one of their favourite artists being on it. They are also emphasising the word “massive” as it is in yellow and in all uppercase. By emphasising on that word it makes the audience notice it and believe that they are getting more for the money that they are paying. The masthead on the magazine is in white so it stands out against the red background. It is also printed across the whole of the top of the magazine which means it will be easily seen by the readers in the shop. The layout of the magazine is very busy/hectic and has a lot for the reader to look at when they first see it. It also gives off an energetic vibe as it has The main point of interest is the “official rock the vibrant colours and a lot of 100” which has been printed using all of the content on the cover which main colours used by the magazine and is could also suggest that this placed in the centre of the page. It also has music genre is very energetic Mark Hoppus holding it which makes people and hectic. pay attention to it as he is a famous artist. The main colour theme for Kerrang magazines is red, black and white splashes of yellow added in. The black and white contrast each other and the red background helps to make the splash image stand out. By adding in the small splashes of yellow to show important points it directs the audiences attention towards the article. There are sixteen images on the front cover which are of varying different artists featured in the magazine to do with this genre. This gives the audience an idea of which bands/artists will be in the magazine. As it does this, people will be able to tell who will be in the magazine and whether they should buy it or not. There are many different artists mentioned on the front cover which shows that it will not just feature the main article but it will also include articles about other bands as well. It also attracts a wider audience as, people who do not necessarily like the main article, will still have something to look at and will be more likely to buy it. The average price for a Kerrang magazine is £2.20 and comes out every week. This is a good price for the magazine as you get a lot of content in the magazine every week for a low price which people are more likely to be able to afford. As it comes out on a weekly basis, if the audience favourite band is not in it that week, they will not have to wait long for the next issue to come out where there is a higher chance of them being featured. It is printed in a very small text size which means the reader is less likely to take notice of it until after they have read what will be included in the magazine. The word “rock” used on the front cover shows the audience immediately what genre of music this magazine is for. It also means that people who have never seen or heard of the magazine before can automatically tell what the magazine will be about. This means that, without even reading the magazine, they already know what to expect from it and won’t have to question it.
  4. The largest area on the page is an image of a band. This will grab the readers attention as it stands out clearly on the page and if the reader is a fan of this band they are more likely to buy the magazine to have a chance of winning the competition included in the magazine. The main focus on the contents page is on the contest being held . This is likely to encourage people to buy the magazine as they will want to have a chance to meet one of their favourite bands. The article on the contents page includes information on how to enter the competition which will make people more likely to buy it to try and win tickets. There is a message from an artist included on the contents page which suggests that artists are happy to speak about the magazine and want to help advertise it. This also helps the magazine as people may see their favourite artist talking about the magazine and will be encouraged to buy it. The title for the contents page is at the very top with the name of the magazine. This means that the audience is much more likely to remember the name of the magazine and can easily identify what page this is. In each of the sections are the different articles that relate to that topic. This makes it much easier for the audience to see where the articles they want to read are, in the magazine. Each of the articles have been separated into different sections. By doing this, it makes it much easier for the reader to find an article about a specific subject in the magazine. There is information in the bottom corner on how to subscribe to the magazine. By including this, people are much more likely to subscribe to them as there is clear information on how to do it. It also mentions how it is a special deal which suggests that you will like the magazine enough to want to get a subscription to save money with the amount of times you are going to buy it.
  5. The title of the article is an extract from the main article. By doing this, it is likely to catch the readers attention and give them a clue as to what it is about as it mentions coming back. With this and the main image being of Mark Hoppus, the readers can have a good guess as to what the article will be about. It is also printed much larger so it stands out on the rest of the page causing people to look at it. This article is a part of the news section on the contents page. By having it at the top of the page it allows the reader to quickly and easily see which section they are in and whether it is the right one or not. The sub title of the magazine is about how they have recently announced a new tour. The sub title is in red which is the only time that it is used on the page. This makes it stand out clearly and grab the readers attention. It also allows people to notice it and read it easily against the dark background which increases the readability of the magazine for the audience The article is all about how Blink-182 are coming to England for their new tour. It includes all of the information to do with the tour for the audience so they can find out all about it. This would be a big article for the magazine as it would catch a lot of peoples attention and it would be very recent news. The main image on the page takes up the whole of the right side of the page and is of Mark Hoppus (the lead vocalist in Blink-182), this gives people the chance to recognise them immediately before even reading who the article is about. By having it take up so much of the page, it catches the readers attention and – if they are fans of Blink182 – they are more likely to stop to read the article. The image is faded slightly and the colours blend in with the background. This gives a sense of him being a part of the music and belonging with it rather than just performing. The background is quite dark and consists of many images of guitars put together and faded slightly. This relates to the main image as he is the guitarist of the band and the style of the background is the same as the main image. It also helps to make the article stand out as it is a dark background but with white and red text over the top.
  6. NME magazine
  7. The title is on the opposite side of the image which makes the audience look at all of the magazine rather than just one area of it. It brings the eye around the whole of the cover so the audience sees every article on the cover by looking first at the title then traveling over the chance to win article, to the main image and then to the album cover and then price. By doing this the price is the last thing seen after the reader has seen all of the articles featured in the magazine. The phrase “super rare” makes the audience feel like they are getting something which they would be missing out on if they didn’t buy the magazine. By saying “super rare”, it is something that they will not come across very often and there being “10 super rare” objects will give the audience a bigger reason to buy the magazine. There is a chance to win concert tickets in the magazine and it is advertised on the front cover. By doing this, they are giving people more of a reason to buy the magazine as they could win tickets to a concert. One of the titles one the cover say how “The Vaccines finally came of age”. This is, not only the title of the article but, it is also the name of their new album out. More popular fans of The Vaccines will recognise this and read it to find out more about their new album which has been released. The name of the band, “The Vaccines”, has been repeated three times over the magazine which reinforces the idea of them being the main focus of the magazine. Also, by using the repetition of the band name, people are more likely to remember it and recognise the band if they see their name anywhere. It also means that, big fans of the band will want to buy the issue to find out more about them. There is an image of an album cover which the band has written which is covering the splash image slightly. This makes it seem like the album is just as important as the band as it is something that they have put a lot of work into. The main colour theme for NME is white, red and black with the main background colour being white. By having the white background it makes all of the articles, titles and images stand out clearly and are easy to see and read. Red is used as the main title colour and to highlight important details (like artists names and offers) which draws the readers attention towards these points. There is also a small amount of blue and yellow used to advertise the chance to win concert tickets. This may have been done to make people take notice of the chance to win as it is quite a big contrast to the usual colours being used in the magazine. A lot of the text used on the front cover looks like someone has written on it rather than it being printed onto the page. It has been used to show a new CD and an article about a “personal journey” of an artist, by using the handwriting effect it gives it a much more personal feel. It also emphasises that it is a “personal” article and an album that the band has worked very hard on creating. There are only three images used on the cover and they all relate to the band The Vaccines. This shows that this issue of the magazine will have The Vaccines as the main focus and will be the main feature in the magazine. There are not a lot of images used on this cover which gives the magazine a clean, polished, professional feel. This type of layout could represent their type of magazine and the type of content people will be able to find in it. The splash image is of the lead singer from The Vaccines with the name of an article about him on the top of his head. It is accompanied by an image of the other three members of the band, this shows that he is the main person in the band and the other three are just backing him up. There is also the name of an article on top of his head which gives the impression of them running out of space on the page and the magazine being packed full of articles for the audience to read. The price of the magazine is the smallest text on the cover so it is one of the last things the audience will see, it is also the last thing that the audience will see when looking across the magazine through the pattern. The average price of the magazine is £2.20 which is a good price for it coming out every week. The price is much lower which suggests the target audience is people who do not have as much money to spend weekly so the price has been lowered to make it more affordable.
  8. There is a large image of a band playing up on stage in the middle of the contents page. This helps to draw the readers attention to the article and will make them more likely to read the article and the rest of the magazine. It will also make them want to buy the magazine if they see one of their favourite band members in the image as it is one of the first pages they will see. The title of the magazine is at the top of the page and stands out clearly against the black background. This helps the audience to remember the magazine name and recognise it when they see it again. There is a band index that lists all of the different bands which are mentioned in the magazine. This will appeal to a much larger audience as, even if one of your favourite bands aren’t mentioned on the cover or in the contents you are likely to find them in the index. There is a short opening story included on the contents page which will grab the readers attention. This will give the audience a taster as to what they will find later in the magazine and a short story to make them interested in the magazine and upcoming articles. One of the biggest pieces of information on the page is information on how to subscribe to the magazine. By doing this, they are more likely to convince the reader to subscribe as they talk about a special deal if they do. It will also help to convince people who are new to the magazine to buy it as it is suggesting that they will love the magazine so much that they will want to get more issues, and it will be cheaper for them to subscribe. Instead of the title saying that this is the contents page, it has the magazine name and “this week” as the title. By doing this it gives the impression of there being something new to talk about every week and this is what happened “this week”. This will also attract the readers attention as they will see the title at the top of the page and will know exactly what the page will be about, it also will make them believe that they are reading something completely different to the previous weeks issue. The contents on the page are separated into different sections so the reader can quickly see what type of articles will be featured in the magazine. It also makes it much easier for the reader to easily see what is in the magazine without having to read through all of it just to see one of their favourite artists. In each of the different sections of the contents, the main article sin this section are listed. This gives the audience an idea as to what the main focus of this section will be. It also makes it much easier for the audience to find the articles which will interest them. In the bottom right corner of the page there is a red arrow that points towards the next page. The colour stands out on the white background and the white text is a good contrast against the red which draws the audiences attention. This also encourages the reader to go to the next page as it is pointing towards the edge of the paper and making you want to turn the page to see why it is pointing towards it.
  9. The main title of the article is the bands name. This tells the reader immediately that this article is purely based on the band The Vaccines and that is it. It is the largest text on the screen which makes it stand out clearly, especially against the white background which makes it much easier for the audience to read. There is a brief description of the article below the main title which gives the audience an idea as to what the article will include/why it has been done. It also includes some words in blue which emphasise the importance of those areas of the article. By doing this, it will catch the readers attention and will draw them into reading it. Two members of the band are holding guitars in the picture which suggests that the band is mainly centred around guitar music and that is what those The main article is all about The Vaccines two members play as well. If someone is reading it and includes a quote in the middle of it who hasn’t heard of them before it gives them an from a member of the band which gives the insight into the type of music that they play so they reader the impression of them being can take a guess as to whether they will like them or spoken to rather than just reading about it. not. The main image is of the four members of the band looking straight at the camera which gives the reader the feeling of being connected with them. The image also takes up about two thirds of the double page spread which shows how the image links with the article and how important the members are. There are blue lines placed randomly around the page which is a part of the main colour scheme of the page and also suggests the simple pop like music that they play while not excluding the more rock style that they have. This also helps to add some more colour to the otherwise plain page as the main colours are black and white but with the few blue splashes. The background of the image is a muddy white colour which could suggest the muddy type of rock music that makes up most of the music that they play. It also links with the feel of the main image as they both have the same “muddy” look to them.
  10. Classic Rock magazine
  11. There is an announcement for a “2013 preview”. It has been done in a red background with orange text which makes it clearly stand out against the rest of the background and draws your eye to it. It is one of the brightest things on the page which makes the reader look straight at it and, with the title saying that it is a preview, they will believe that they are going to find out more information before anyone else on the bands mentioned below it. This will also help to increase the likelihood of the reader wanting to buy it. The magazine title – Classic Rock – takes up most of the top third of the page and is slightly covered by the splash image. This suggests that the magazine is well known and people will automatically know what the magazine is. As the title is so large and stands out clearly against the grey background it makes it much easier for the audience to notice the magazine and want to pick it up to read it. By doing this they are drawn towards the magazine and will be encouraged to read it. There are four main colours used on the cover (white, black, grey and orange) with the white, grey and black contrasting against each other and the orange helping draw attention to articles, it encourages the eye to look around the cover and take in all of the different information on it. There are several different colours used for the special feature which makes the audience look at it and want to see why it has been done differently compared to the rest of the page. The main colours used are orange, red, yellow and blue which are not commonly used anywhere else on the page which makes this stand out a lot more than if it was just in white or black. It also encourages the audience to read the text beneath it as it may connect with The barcode and the price are at the very the feature. bottom, right side of the page. The price There is an article on the cover which is titled is the smallest thing on the page which “plus” which suggests that you are getting means that it will be the last thing to be even more content in the magazine. By doing read on the page so the audience will have read all of the other articles before this, the audience believes that they are seeing the price so they will already want going to be receiving even more information than they would get in any other magazine to read the rest of the magazine so will be willing to pay for it. The average price and they will want to buy it to read abut the extra content. for the magazine is £4.99. The splash image is of the lead singer from Muse. As Muse is a highly famous band, more people are likely to recognise him and want to pick up the magazine to see why he is being named as the main feature of the magazine. Also, many people like the band Muse so, by including a splash image of the lead singer, they will expand their future audience as more people will be likely to buy it. If the reader is unfamiliar with the person on the splash image, they can easily see which band they are from through the main title saying “Muse” across the page. The title takes up the whole width of the page and goes across the splash image, this reinforces the idea that this will be the main article being featured in the magazine. It also has text inside the U which explains what the article will feature. This is a good way of showing the reader that it is connected with the band and also gives them a preview as to what the article will be about. There are many different artists mentioned along the left side of the page which relate to the 2013 previews. This means that, if the reader sees a band that they are a big fan of, they are more likely to buy the magazine as it features a and they like. It also means that, if they don’t like Muse, they may see another band that they like along the side. This means that they are less likely to loose out on people buying it due to not seeing a band that they know/like.
  12. Most of the contents page is taken up with the cover story. This encourages the reader to look at it and want to read it rather than looking for other articles. It also means that, when people saw the story on the cover, it will be easy for them to find out where the story is in the magazine rather than searching through the column of other articles. The contents page has a very basic layout as it only consists of three colours – red, white and black – which give it a simplistic, yet structured and professional look. By doing this the audience will get the impression that the magazine is professional and up to date with everything due to the structured way that it is all arranged. The word “exclusive” has been used to draw attention to the interviews which are being featured in the magazine. The word “exclusive” suggests that they are a one off which no other magazine will have. This gives readers the confidence in spending their money on the magazine as they will be getting something extra from it. As the text is white with a red background, it stands out clearly against the image behind it. It is also the biggest amount of colour on the page which helps draw the readers attention to it – through it being placed here, people are likely to see it after looking at the image covering the page. Each of the main articles featured in the magazine are organised into a neat column on the right side of the page. As well as this; each of the articles have a headline in bold of the artist being talked about and all of the page numbers are in red so they stand out clearly from the articles and against the background. All of these help people to easily see each artist being mentioned and what page you can find them on without causing any confusion. With the description beneath each of the titles it gives the reader a preview of what to expect from each of the articles and will give them a rough impression as to whether they will want to read it or not. The image of the Rolling Stones takes up nearly the whole of the contents page. The colour has been taken out of it which gives it an older feel and the lead is staring straight at the camera which makes the audience feel connected with the artists. Through taking the colour out of the image and creating the older feel to it, it can help to imply the type of older rock music that they play and how they have been in the music industry for a long time. At the bottom of the contents page there is a small circle to say that you can win concert tickets. This will encourage people to buy the magazine so that they can find out how to win tickets to see a band The colours used for it relate to the colour scheme of the magazine as it is a light grey (almost white) with white and black text used – the white has been used to highlight important areas. Through doing this, it keeps with the simplistic style and helps the reader to see which parts are the most important in the contest.
  13. In the corner of the page there is a circle with the words “inside the world of rock” with the bands name below it. This suggests that the band is a big part of the rock world and have been apart of it for a while which would encourage people to read it as they can found out more about the “world of rock”. The actual interview goes over both of the pages which both combines the two pages together and gives the impression of it being a long interview with the band. Both with the interview and the image of the band members looking directly at the camera, it gives a feeling of them telling you the answer and talking directly to the reader During the article, there is a quote from the interview. This helps to separate the article and allow the reader to see an amusing/interesting part of the interview which will make them want to see why they gave that answer and how it happened. This is commonly used in magazines to help give the reader an impression on the type of article that it is and will also help to draw their attention to the article rather than looking at the picture and then moving on. The image of the band takes up the whole of the page and all of the colours used in it link together with the colour scheme of the rest of the page. The members are all wearing relatively dark colours which contradict with the white background, helping to make them stand out more. As the image is so large, it automatically makes you look at it so, if someone is flicking through the magazine they are much more likely to see this and stop to read the article. Also, if people are fans of the band they are going to recognise the members quickly and want to read more of the magazine as it is someone that they recognise. In the interview, each of the questions being asked have been put in bold text. This lets the reader easily distinguish between what the band are being questioned and what they are answering. It also helps to separate each question into different sections as each new paragraph starts with the bold question on the top
