  3. 3.  Some important terms: Broadband - Telecommunications in which a wide range of frequencies are available to transmit information. Contention Ratio – Ratio showing how many people could be sharing the capacity on one connection. Kbps – Kilo Bites per second Mbps – Mega Bites per second
  4. 4.  Types of telecommunications companies: Eircom offer home phone lines, broadband services and e-mobile services. Strencom specialise in data networks and cloud computing, but also offer broadband. UPC provide home phone lines, TV and broadband services.
  5. 5.  Types of telecommunications companies: Wimax offer home phone lines, broadband and e-mobile services. Digiweb offer home phone lines and broadband services. Vodaphone offer mobile phone, broadband and land line services.
  6. 6.  Medium of communication: Vodaphone, Strencom and Eircom use copper wire cables to connect you to the internet. UPC use fibre powered broadband. Wimax transmits from a hotspot to your device. Digiweb transmits through phone lines, wireless to hotspots and satellite internet.
  7. 7.  Technological options available to me: Eircom’s ‘Up to 24Mb Broadband’ package costs €47.99 and is transmitted via phone lines. Download speed – 24Mbps Upload speed – 768 Kbps Contention ratio – 48:1 Line rental is €20.97 Monthly rate is €68.95
  8. 8.  Technological options available to me: Vodaphones ’24Mb Office’ Package is €64.99 and is transmitted via phone lines. Download speed – 24kbps Upload speed – 1kbps Contention ratio – 48:1 There are no other hidden charges.
  9. 9.  Technological options available to me: Digiwebs ‘Bizwave Enhanced’ home package is €84.69 and is transmitted wirelessly Download speed – 1mbps Upload speed – 256kbps Contention ratio – 20:1 There is an installation fee of €99.00
  10. 10.  Technological options available to me: UPC’s ‘Fibre Power Broadband 50Mb’ home package is €45.00 and is transmitted via fibre wire. Download speed – 50mbps Upload speed – 5mbps Contention ratio – 17:1 There is an installation fee of €20.00
  11. 11.  Which option would I choose? Personally, I would go for UPC’s ’50mb Fibre Powered Broadband’ for €45.00. I believe it is the best value of money and it offers good upload and download speeds. There is also a good contention ratio, 17:1. This means there won’t be too many people on the same line.
