We alsothank the volunteers who have helped us run off copies andhelp shelve books and other tasks that have helped us have agreat start to the school year. We encourage you to keep usinformed of change of address, email, and phone numbers.Weather is turning cold, so please label all jackets, coats andsweaters. We ask for your participation and support.   4. 4. Congratulations to our district wide poetry slam winner,Allison Baxter!!! Here is the poem that she took first place with!!! Loose Tooth by Allison Baxter Wiggle. Wiggle. My loose tooth. Can’t wait to pull it out. It feels funny in my mouth. Bit an apple. Crunch! It’s still there. Chewed some caramel. Is it gone? Nope. Wiggle. Wiggle. Try to pull it out? Ouch! That hurts. Tie a string. Slam the door. BAM! Wiggle. Wiggle. Still there. Dad can help. Open wide! Don’t cry. Close your eyes. POP! OK. All done. Tooth Fairy, here we come!
  5. 5. Kindergarten News• Reading – Partners are Teachers. Children transfer all they have learned up until now to problem solve as readers.• Writing – How To. Children will learn how to write procedural books to instruct people how to do something.• Math – Measurement and counting.• Science/Social Studies – Penguins and Fairy Tales
  6. 6. What are we studying?? Reading: Getting to know Characters in books. Writing: Persuasive and Opinion Writing. Math: MeasurementMake sure your child is reading 3-4 times a week at home! Makesure to sign the log!! Make sure you1st Graders Use Technology in study your Sight the Classroom…… Word Lists!!Computers, iPads, Promethea n Boards, etc…

Reading For the Months of December and January we are focusing on Series Reading and Cross Genre Reading Writing For the Months of December and January We are focusing on Opinion Writing Math Our focus in math for December is Collecting Data and Graphing. Science/Social StudiesWe will be learning about Force and Motion.
  8. 8. Nonfiction Reading; We are readingReader’s Workshop:books to get true information on different topics. Weare also reading biographies…Students need to bereading at least 20 minutes each night. Log reading athome.Writer’s Workshop: Nonfiction books on chosentopics. Each student is sharing as an expert on atopic and teaching what he/she knows through theuse of nonfiction.Math Workshop: Multiplication and Division…be learningmultiplication facts 0-12. Practice every night at home!!!! PARENTS!! Be on the look out for… • Winter Carnival December 13 • Santa Shop December 17-21 • Winter Party December 21
  9. 9. 4th Grade HappeningsReading- Social Issues Book Clubs. We will learn that reading can teach us about issues thatexist in the world and in our lives. Remember to read 30 minutes each night. Talk aboutwhat you read with someone.Writing- Literary essay. Literary essay offers a bridge between reading and writing. It helpsstudents learn that writing can be a way to not only hold on to one’s thinking about aparticular subject or, more specifically, about a text but also to clarify and elaborate on thatthinking.Science- We will be studying the states of matter and basic electricity. We will be doing lotsof hands on activity.Math- We will be finishing up landmarks and large numbers and beginning a unit onfractions and decimals.   10. 10. Look What’s Happening in 5th Grade Math/Science In math, we will continue studying fractions. Wewill be learning how to add, subtract, multiply, anddivide fractions. After break in January, we will be studying geometry-different types of polygons. In science, we will be studying matter inDecember and will begin a unit on light and energy in January. Both classes had a great time working on the ecosystems unit. Literacy/Social Studies In reading we are continuing our study of Nonfiction reading and will move into nonfiction research projects. In writing, we are wrapping up our information books and will move into research based argument essay. The kids are finishing up their projects on exploration, and then The kids enjoyed after Christmas break, we will begin our study on Leadership pajama day! during Colonial Times.
  11. 11. Drop off and Pick up• Bus drop off and pick up will be located behind the building on North 22nd Street.• Car drop off and pick up will now be located in the front of Central Elementary School on North 24th Street.
