Ten years ago, Mark Prensky coined the terms digital natives ( a person who was born during or after the introduction of digital technology) and digital immigrants. However, recent reseach shows that these "natives" are not so comfortable with technology as expected. Today, Martin Weller proposes a more realistic view on this topic and introduces "the digital scholar".
In this presentation, the presenter (Phd-student, teacher and webaddict) brings her point of view on how teachers can use social media in their classroom.

  • You say you want a revolution Well, you know We all want to change the world
  • Today’s students (digital natives) think and process information fundamentally differently from their predecessors. (Prensky, 2001)
  • The single biggest problem facing education today is that our digital immigrant instructors, who speak an outdated language (that of the pre-digital age), are struggling to teach a population that speaks an entirely new language. (Prensky, 2001)
  • Today’s teachers have to learn to communicate in the language and style of their students. This doesn’t mean changing the meaning of what is important, or of good thinking skills. But it does mean going faster, less step-by step, more in parallel, with more random access, among other things… (Prensky, 2001)

  • You tell me that it’s evolution Well, you know We all want to change the world
  • A common theme from a number of recentreports seems to be that far from being the tech- savvy, digitally immersed cyborgs portrayed inmuch of the literature, there are some relatively poor information skills amongst the net generation and a good deal of variance. (Weller, 2011)
  • There is some moderate evidence that there are some differences in the expectations of net generation learners and possibly an increase in dissatisfaction with education. There is a question of whether theseexpectations are really unique to the net generation. (Weller, 2011)
  • What we need to be concerned about are the changes in the digital society. (Weller, 2011)
  • The two key elements driving changes (in other industries): The digitisation of content A global, social network (Weller, 2011)
  • You say you want a real solution Well, you know We’d all love to see the plan
PLE, Twitter, MOOC)English translation: check Speaker notes

  • Don’t forget the other trends
