GCSE Biology Enzymes - Presentation Transcript

    1. STARTER Fill in the missing words – what do you know about enzymes Enzymes are ………. . They have an ……. site which is a particular shape. A specific ………. fits into this like a key in a ……… . Enzymes work best at an optimum …… and optimum …………. . pH protein substrate active temperature lock
    2. Learning Outcomes
      • Enzymes
      • ALL State the properties of enzymes
      • MOST Describe the effect of temperature and pH on the enzyme
      • SOME Describe the role of enzymes in respiration and protein synthesis
    3. How Enzymes Work Lock Key and theory (Biological Catalysts ) Enzyme Substrate Products Active site
    4. enzyme properties
      • They are proteins
      • Sensitive – respond to changes
      • Used again – because they don’t change
      • Sensitive to temperature – use animation to plot a graph to show the effect of temperature on enzyme activity
      • Sensitive to pH – how acid (pH 1 – 6) / alkaline ( pH 8 – 14) something is (neutral pH 7)
      • Sensitive to pH – how acid (pH 1 – 6) / alkaline ( pH 8 – 14) something is (neutral pH 7)
pH can affect the shape of the ACTIVE SITE which prevents the substrate fitting in, so NO products are made
    5. Effect of pH on enzyme activity ISA Ensure that you are working safely by following the safety advice of your teacher! Watch the teacher demonstration! Follow the instructions carefully on your practical sheet pH
    6. Role of enzymes in Cells
      • Enzyme control all of the following processes
      RESPIRATION PROTEIN SYNTHESIS PHOTOSYNTHESIS DIGESTION
    7. Aerobic Respiration
      • Use pages 180 and 181 to find out more about the role of ENZYMES in AEROBIC RESPIRATION.
      • Complete pages 4 and 5 in your workbook
Protein synthesis & photosynthesis Use your knowledge from previous lessons to complete page 6 in your workbook e.g. knowledge from workbook 1 and 2
    8. Learning Outcomes
      • Enzymes
      • ALL State the properties of enzymes
      • MOST Describe the effect of temperature on the enzyme
      • SOME Describe the role of enzymes in respiration and protein synthesis
