  • 1. Photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook aphotographic survey of the Russian Empirewith the support of Tsar Nicholas II. He useda specialized camera to capture three blackand white images in fairly quick successionand then using red, green and blue filtersrecombined the images to produce colorphotos that were ahead of their time. Thehigh quality of Gorskii’s pics make it difficultfor viewers to believe that they are looking100 years back in time
  • 2. The Russian Empire was a state thatexisted from 1721 until the RussianRevolution in 1917. It was the secondlargest contiguous empire in worldhistory, surpassed only by the MongolEmpire, the third largest empire theBritish Empire. At one point in 1866, itstretched from eastern Europe, acrossAsia, and into North America. By theend of the 19th century the size of theempire was about (8,600,000 sq mi) oralmost 1/6 of the Earths landmass.
