  • PART ONE What’s The Trinity Like??
  • SOME QUICK POINTS ABOUT THE TRINITY Human minds cannot truly grasp God’s Triune existence. All explanations fall short. All of them! The word ‘Trinity’ never appears in scripture The Bible contains no single teaching passage on God’s triune nature. Our understanding of the Trinity represents a CONCLUSION we form based on biblical teachings.
  • WORKING DEFINITIONS YES: TRINITY: 1. One ESSENC E, three PERSONS 2. One GODHEAD , three PERSONS NO: TRINITY: 1. Three persons in one person 2. One God, three manifestations 3. Three Gods working together 4. One real God, two associate figu res
  • R.C. SPROUL’S MODEL OF THE TRINITY Uses human nature as a model for explaining the nature of our Creator. For HIS original audio message, go to: http:// www.ligonier.org/rym/broadcasts/ audio/breath-life/# I’m going to outline his thoughts.
  • GOD AND MAN ARE BOTH CONSCIOUS BEINGS . . . GOD THE FATHER MAN Eternal: Perfect Created: Imperfect Conscious mind sputters and fumbles Conscious Spirit: Eternally active through time and space Eternally thinking-The One Who Our thinking limited to time/space knows EVERYTHING!! constraints Eternally Self-Aware: Complete Limited self-awareness, flawed and knowledge of Self and eternity filled with self-delusion The Father: First Person of Trinity Ego, self
  • CONSCIOUS MINDS GENERATE THOUGHTS . . . GOD’S THOUGHTS MAN’S THOUGHTS God has always known an eternity’s- Limited and finite, faulty memory, worth of His words, thoughts, ideas imaginary future, lies and truth Known collectively as ‘The Begotten I have a faulty, imperfect thought Word’, the Word was with God and collection which has no independence the Word was God, the Son, Jesus from my mind Son co-exists in perfect harmony with My thoughts are often at odds my the Father (agape love) own mind- Jesus is the Father’s own flawless My limited self-awareness cannot Self-Awareness manifest in the flesh stand on its own Jesus: 2nd Person of Trinity, defers to My thoughts alternately shame and the Father!!! defend me.
  • CONSCIOUS MINDS HAVE A WILL . . GOD’S WILL MAN’S WILL The Father’s Word proceed My thoughts and words often throughout eternity with PURPOSE purposeless and random God’s mind and His Word work in My will often driven by instinct, rogue agreement to generate Their Will, The thoughts and feelings Holy Spirit God’s Will, the HS, proceeds in My will seems to thwart my mind’s harmony from His mind and Word own intentions! Weak/aggressive The supreme desire of God is for His My supreme desire if for Lenny’s Will to succeed supremacy and comfort My will is an inner drive I imperfectly Holy Spirit: 3rd Person of the Trinity regulate and direct
  • My mind, my thoughts and my will are one–Lenny. And yet the three are distinct and separate elements, having different roles and purposes in ‘my’ life. My mind is the first element, my words and thoughts are the second, together my mind and words express my will, my third element.
  • God’s Mind,Thoughts and Will are One. And yet the Three are distinct and separate, having different roles and purposes in the Being of the Creator. God’s Mind is the first Person: the Father. His Word is the second Person: the Son. Together God’s Mind and Word express His perfect Will, the third Person: the Holy Spirit.
  • In my finite being, mind, word and will never rise to the level of personhood. I’m weak, imperfect and unrighteous. These three serve only as elements in my Lenny-ness. In God’s infinite Being, Mind, Word and Will rise in power, perfection and righteousness to the level of independent Persons in their own right And yet, God’s Mind,Thoughts and Will are One. Our God is One!
  • PART TWO How does the Bible teach trinity?
  • No other single doctrine of the Church has caused more problems for Christians than the Bible’s teachings about The Triune Nature of God!
  • A QUESTION ABOUT THE TRINITY Arguments about how to explain the Trinityifficult er d have divided Why n for ju st let this rath Christians ot centuries. the wayside ? doctr ine drop off by Jews, Muslims and atheists mock us for this belief. • OK, WHY BOTHER? Biblical teachings FORCE this conclusion upon faithful readers 1. God is One: Deuteronomy 6:4, John 10:30 2. God exists in three persons: Matthew 3:36, 28:19, Acts 5:4 3. OT constantly hints at God’s plurality: Gen 3:22 and 11:7
  • THE BIBLE SPEAKS TO US OF TRINITY 1. God is One: Deuteronomy 6:4, John 10:30 Hear, of Israel! The Lord is our God! The Lord is One! Deuteronomy 6:4 “I and the Father are One” Jesus in John 10:30
  • THE BIBLE SPEAKS TO US OF TRINITY 2. God exists in three persons: Matthew 3:16, 28:19, Acts 5:4 After being baptized, J esus came up immediately from the water and behold, the heavens were opened and He saw th e Spirit of God descending as a dove and ligh ting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in w hom I am well pleased. Matthew 3:16 + 17 All 3 Persons seen together!
  • THE BIBLE SPEAKS TO US OF TRINITY 2. God exists in three persons: Matthew 3:16, 28:19, Acts 5:4 “Go therefore and ma ke disciples of all the nations baptizing them in the name of the Fat and the Son and the H her Matthew 28:19 oly Spirit.” Jes us in All 3 Persons named in partnership
  • THE BIBLE SPEAKS TO US OF TRINITY 2. God exists in three persons: Matthew 3:16, 28:19, Acts 5:4 “Why has Satan filled you r heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep bac k some of the price of the land . . . . You hav e not lied to men but to God!” Peter to Ananias in Acts 5:3+4 Holy Spirit a Person and God together!
  • THE BIBLE SPEAKS TO US OF TRINITY 3. OT constantly hints at God’s plurality: Gen 3:22 and 11:7, Isaiah 9:6+7 Then the Lord Go d said, “Behold, the man has becom e like one of Us . . . Deuteronomy 6:4 What’s up with the ‘Us’???
  • THE BIBLE SPEAKS TO US OF TRINITY 3. OT constantly hints at God’s plurality: Gen 3:22 and 11:7, Isaiah 9:6+7 For a child will b e born to us . . .a be called Wonde nd His name will rful Counsellor, M The zeal of the L ighty God . . . ord of hosts will Isaiah 9:6+7 accomplish this. God a child? Bor n? The Lord doe s this thing?
  • PART THREE . . . wel l, just you wait ti ll I tell you about th is Trinity’ thing , mister! what do i do with this ‘trinity’ idea? how does ‘trinity’ affect my daily christian walk?
  • THE TRINITY SERVES AS A MODEL FOR CHRISTIAN LIVING God modeled man after the Trinity God designs His every command to help believers enjoy elements of the Trinitarian experience.
  • The Trinitarian experience condensed into a nine-word sentence:
  • AUTHOR: Ravi Zacharias “Perfect diversity, unity and community exist within the Trinity.”
  • HERE’S HOW I GOT THERE. . . 1. Our One God exists in three Persons: A. DIVERSITY: Each Person exists uniquely as individuals within the Godhead B. UNITY: All coexist together in unity within the Godhead, C. COMMUNITY: They create a perfect, loving community with one another
  • SO IS IT ANY SURPRISE THAT . . . an’s, made in God’s image, desperately 1. We hum ect diversity, unity seek our ow n experience of perf and comm unity in our lives lves are three-part b eings: body, soul a. We ourse and spir it in one organism b. We seek fulfillme nt as individuals c. We seek u nity with others d. We hunger for a se nse of community to sustain us.
  • LIKE POTTER, LIKE POT! In our hunger f or a satisfying ex perience of div ersity, unity and com munity, we refl ect our Triune Creator’s ver y essence and ackn owledge Him as our Creator.
  • THE KEY ROLE OF LOVE . . . Love played a key role in the experience of the Trinity 2. God created us in an expression of love THAT ALREADY EXISTED IN THE TRINITY. A. God was not lonely or bored and therefore He went and created us for something to occupy His attention!! B. Goodness and love exist as independent virtues in eternity; sin and evil appeared later, in time and space!
  • 22 “The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. 24 “Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. ry love relatio nship does the I nto this love ve on His Son. vite those of u s who believe Father in
  • LOVE COMES TO THE CREATION FROM GOD’S ETERNAL TRINITY ned us to experienc e that eternal love And God desig xperience of love in ways that r eflect the Trinity’s e uples procreate in an act of love that 1. Christian co e xpresses the unity an d community they EADY EXPERIEN CE as individuals ALR PRE-EXISTENT u nion of marriage. within a guides couples in C hristian marriage 2. God’s Word ips of The Trinity to taste th e mystical relationsh
  • DID YOU EVER NOTICE . . . 1. The Bible instructs the diversity of believers how to individually perfect their characters 2. The Bible instructs married couples how to perfect their sacred unity 3. The Bible instructs church communities how to experience godly fellowship
  • THESE CONSIDERATIONS LEAD ME TO THIS CONCLUSION: The Trinity ser ves a s the model by which we as Christian individuals, coup les and fellows hips function. Go d calls even fal len humans, as believers in Christ, to know somet hing of the mys tical joys of the Trinity’s agape love.
  • THESE CONSIDERATIONS LEAD ME TO THIS CONCLUSION: G od design s His every comma nd to help believers enjoy elem ents of the T rinitarian ex perience.
  • APPLICATION LAB How’s this Going to Help?
  • TAKE STOCK NOW OF YOUR NEW APPRECIATION FOR THE TRINITY You have a model: God: Mind-Word-Will You know it’s important: Taught in Scripture Basis of love Model for Bible’s instructions on living a Christian life
  • ACCEPT THE WORLDʼS RIDICULE WITH GRACE No other religion challenges its believers with such a complex notion of God’s nature The doctrine of the Trinity serves Christianity as a bold distinctive you may take pleasure in!
  • REJOICE IN DISCOVERING BIBLICAL CLUES TO TRINITY Like Isaiah 6:3-the Trinity by acclimation In Ephesians 5, where the complex relationships among believing husbands and wives mirrors many aspects of the Trinity’s interrelationships
