XXIV Millennium vs. Eternal State

I leap back one space on John's Isle of Patmos game board! We've stepped back out of eternity and into the more-ore-less familiar realm of time and space. Revelation Chapters 19-21 stands us on the boundary twixt these two states. They offer us a chance to explore two separate states, the so-called Millennium and the Eternal State. I see reasons for making a distinction between the two and explore my thinking in this presentation.

Hmmm . . unt for thos the disposition of(19:20) e I call ANTICHRIST: Consigned to hell “The Tribulation Six” SATAN: Initially end of the Tribulation. at the bound for 1000 years of the Millennium; released to tempt a new set of humans one more time. Let’s to hell at AntiChrist. (Rev 20) Defeated and consigneddo thwithnow.
    6. 6. REPORT ON THE TRIBULATION SIX ISRAEL: In the Millennium, the world’s worship leaders (Zechariah 12-14). Folded into the Eternal City’s structure and architecture in Eternity (Rev 21:12). THE NATIONS: Ruled with rod of iron in Millennium, resurrected for the Great White Throne Judgment which separates them into those with names in the Book of Life and those with names not written there. Heaven for the former, Hell for the latter! CREATION: Reordered in Millennium, rebuilt in Eternity
    7. 7. I. THE MILLENNIUM FAQ’S Are there people in their natural bodies in the millennium? Could free will exist in the millennium for such people? Would death still play a role among them? Would we (raptured Christians) still witness to people? Would any such people be saved in the millennium?
    8. 8. ARE THERE NATURAL PEOPLE IN THE MILLENNIUM? YES. Source for such a population: Matthew 25:46–Jesus grants Sheep eternal life Isaiah 66:19–Survivors of Armageddon Their Presence in Millennium attested to: Isaiah 66:23– “All mankind comes and bows down” Zechariah 14:16–”The nations that are left . . .” Zechariah 14:18–”The family of Egypt” used as example
    9. 9. IS THERE FREE WILL IN THE MILLENNIUM? YES. Source: Matthew 25: Sheep nations have natural children; free will comes standard. Implied: Revelation 2:26–Christians rule the nations with a rod of iron (implies nations need control of their selfish, free-wheeling wills) Zechariah 14:17: Nations have a choice of worshipping or not; they suffer when disobedient Revelation 20:7–Satan appeals to the free will of the citizens of the Millennium when released.
    10. 10. DOES DEATH (AND SIN) EXIST IN THE MILLENNIUM? YES. Abolished in Eternal State: Revelation 21:4– “. . . . and there shall no longer be any death . . . ” Therefore, logically, death existed in the earlier Millennial State: Here’s corroboration. Isaiah 65:20–Dying at 100 possible Zechariah 14:18–Punishment for disobedience Ezekiel 44:24–Disputes still exist and need adjudicating
    11. 11. IS THERE SALVATION IN THE MILLENNIUM? NO. The Bride is complete before the Millennium starts Completed–Rev 19:7–The Bride has made herself ready upon Christ’s post-tribulational return Joined to Christ–Revelation 19:10–Marriage Supper of the Lamb at end of 70th Week Judged–II Corinthians 5:10–Judgment Seat of Christ evaluates works of the Church Present on Earth–Matthew 25–‘these brothers of Mine’ rule the Nations with rod of iron in Millennium
    12. 12. II. THE ETERNAL STATE FAQ’S Who lives in the New Heaven and New Earth? Who, if anyone, has Jesus assigned to Hell? What role,if any, does sin play in the New Heaven and New Earth? What class of people does the Bible call “brothers” in Revelation?
    13. 13. CITIZENSHIP IN THE ETERNAL STATE’S NEW HEAVEN In New Heaven: The Church: As per John 14:2’s ‘many mansions’ and Rev 21:7 (we inherit The Eternal City) and 22:2 ‘serve Him in The Eternal City. Israel: Implied by the 21:12 gates of the city named for ‘the 12 tribes of sons of Israel’ The Lamb and God: Rev 22:3– Their thrones are in the city.
    14. 14. CITIZENSHIP IN THE ETERNAL STATE’S NEW EARTH On New Earth: Individuals in the ‘Nations’ whose names were in the Book of Life. Rev 21:23–Nations walk by the light of the Eternal City as opposed to dwellers IN the city who walk in the light of the Lord God (Rev 5) inside the city. Suspended above New Earth, the City easily functions distinctly and apart. Rev 21:24–The Kings of the Nations bring their glory INTO the Eternal City, implying movement from a position OUTSIDE that city. New Earth the most obvious source location.
    15. 15. SOURCE OF CITIZENS IN THE ETERNAL STATE’S NEW EARTH Sheep– Granted Eternal Life but not a part of the Body and Bride of Christ. They populate the New Earth in resurrection bodies (See I Corinthians 15:50) Faithful– (???) Any who kept (???) to the Camp of the Saints at the Last Temptation of Mankind (Rev 20: 8+9) Given resurrection bodies??? Great White Throne Judgment: Rev 20:12– Those whose names were in the Book of Life (Romans 2:6-16). Enter New Earth in resurrection bodies.
    16. 16. ROLE OF SIN AND DEATH IN THE ETERNAL STATE: NONE There is no sin here! Rev 21:27 states– “. . . and nothing unclean and no one who practices abomination and lying shall ever come into it (The Eternal City), but only those whose names are written in the Lambs Book of Life.” There is no death here! Rev 21:4– “ . . . and He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes and there shall no longer be any death . . .”
    17. 17. SO WHO WENT TO HELL? AntiChrist and False Prophet: Rev 19:20 ‘Goats’: Matthew 25:46 Satan: Rev 20:10 Those with Mark of Beast: Rev 14:9+10) Those who fell in Last Temptation of Man: Rev 20:10 Any whose names were NOT in Book of Life: Rev 20:14
    18. 18. WHAT ROLE DOES SIN PLAY IN THE ETERNAL STATE? NONE. IGHTEOUS PLAN LEFT WHAT ROLE HAS GOD’S R HE ETERNAL STATE’S NEW FOR SIN TO PLAY IN T HEAVEN AND EARTH???? The entire f orce and sig nificance of abolition of Revelation death shou 20:4’s ts out the jo Death, whe yful chorus re is your s , “Oh, ting? 20. 20. SIN EXISTS NO LONGER IN THE NEW HEAVEN AND THE NEW EARTH!
    21. 21. Please allow me to drop into the weeds a bit here. If you’d rather get on with a survey of Revelation, click HERE to avoid this little foray and get to the last slide in this series. Isaiah 65:17 muddies the waters a bit here the way it’s worded and I want to take a shot at clearing things up a bit.
    22. 22. Point of Order, Mr. Chairman: Isaiah 65:17 has God announcing that “I create new heavens and a new earth” and THEN goes on to ribe what the Millennium looks like. But John desc uses this same phrasing to begin his treatment of the Eternal State!!! How can we then apply the section of Isaiah 65:19-25 to the Millennium? A bit of a muddle?
    23. 23. Prophecy invites questions like this– and has for years! 10 “As to th is salvation , the proph prophesied ets who of the grac e that woul made caref d come to y ul searches ou and inquiri 11. seeking es, to know wh at person o Spirit of Ch r time the rist within them was i He predicte ndicating a d the suffer s ings of Chr glories to fo ist and the llow. 12. It was reveal that they w ed to them ere not serv ing themse in these thi lves, but yo ngs which n u, ow have be to you thro en announc ugh those w ed ho preache to you by th d the gospe e Holy Spir l it sent from things into heaven— which ange ls long to lo I Peter 1:10 ok.” -12
    24. 24. Isaiah and Jesus combine to teach a lesson in reading prophecy. ISAIAH WR OTE THIS ... “1. The Spi rit of the Lo r d God i s u because the pon me, Lord has a nointed me news to the to bring go afflicted; H od e has sent m the brokenh e to bind up earted, to p roclaim lib captives an erty to d freedom t o prisoners proclaim th ; 2. To e favorable year of the day of veng Lord and th eance of ou e r God; to co who mourn mfort all . . .” Isaiah 61: 1 -2
    25. 25. Jesus knows to break this prophecy into TWO PARTS-He stops at ‘Lord’! JESUS REA D ONLY TH IS MUCH I “1. The Spi N A.D.28. . rit of the Lo . r d God i s u because the pon me, Lord has a nointed me news to the to bring go afflicted; H od e has sent m the brokenh e to bind up earted, to p roclaim lib captives an erty to d freedom t o prisoners proclaim th ; 2. To e favorable year of the the day of v Lord and engeance o f our God; who mourn to comfort . . .” Isaiah all 61: 1-2
    26. 26. Jesus knew to stop at ‘Lord’ and tell the Nazarenes “Today this Scripture (only up to that point!) has been fulfilled in your hearing.” dorse Jesus’ decision when we realize that the We en NT teaches a future return in which Jesus will accomplish the rest of Isaiah’s prophecy, the ‘day of vengeance of our God’. We read that knowledge back into many OT prophecies about the Messiah. We have a b enefit the O T Saints did deeper kno not have: a w le d g e , a m ore detailed about God’ knowledge, s plan for th e end times .
    27. 27. So it is with Isaiah 65:17. Two prophetic eras may ll combine in the prophet’s vision. With full we understanding of both the Millennium and the Eternal State, we can distinguish between the two. Isaiah 65:1 7 clearly an ticipates an Eternal Sta d celebrate te with its p s the hrasing: “For behold , I create ne w heavens and the form and a new er things w earth; i l l n o t b e re come to mi membered nd.” or Knowing lit tle about th at Eternal S anticipate m tate, we wo ore informa uld tion about i t would follo w!
    28. 28. BUT WE CAN COMPARE AND CONTRAST THESE TWO STATES Millennium Free will (Slide #5) Sin (Slide #6) Enforced rules (#5) Death not yet abolished (See Rev 21:4) Eternal State Our will joined to God’s (Rev 21:3) No sin (Rev 21:27) Death Abolished (Rev 21:4)
    29. 29. d does not abolish death UNTIL the Eternal So, if Go State, death must necessarily exist in the earlier Millennium. Right? Isaiah 65:2 0 clearly re counts con w h i ch p e o p ditions und le die in the er p e ri o d u n d e by Isaiah 6 r considera 5:17-25. tion THEREFOR E: We have grounds for PARTS to t his prophec seeing TWO y similar to encountere the TWO P d in Isaiah ARTS 61:1 OT Prophe tic visions o ften encom eras in one passed sev grand swee e ra l p. We get t between th o distinguis em with the h help of NT details.
    30. 30. 31. 31. One more question, Mr. Chairman: are the ‘brothers’ so frequently encountered Who d referred to in Revelation? What spiritual status an do they possess? Christians? Jews? Kindly disposed but unsaved friends? This question seems deceptively simple–and, in ncept, it is! But the consequences of nailing this co down drive our study either into shouting matches about Pre-Tribulationism or Post-Tribulationism, and we’ll save those choppy waters for later. hat if those ‘brothers’ are Christians?
