3. 3. Tower Hamlets regeneration strategy

Tower Hamlets is one of the fastest growing urban conglomerates in the country. It comprises a young population with the largest percentage of 20- 34 year olds in England and great ethnic diversity. Over 33.4% of its citizens stem from a Bangladeshi heritage and 42.9% originate from a white British nationality. Over 100 languages are spoken within the borough. Amid the assets, Tower Hamlets is ranked amongst the top four most deprived boroughs in England with over 8.3% of its residents classed unemployed, higher than the inner London average of 6.3%.

Fig 1. 4. 4. Fig 2. City Fringe area of Tower Hamlets The City Fringe is the area most west of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and contributes to Central London activities. There are 43,000 people living in this area and this is one of the areas where significant development will take place over the next 10 years and beyond in the bid to make Tower Hamlets an outstanding tourist destination which can accommodate holiday and business visitors built on the existing vibrant character integrating small and medium enterprises with local cultural and creative activities. Originally the Shoreditch terminus of the Great Eastern railway, it has become an empty void in the city after the extension of the railway line to Liverpool Street station and a period of being the main site for market trade in the area.

The arches are grade 2 listed and remain intact. With the East London line extension physically forcing life back into the integrity of the first high level station, there are extensive redevelopment programmes under consultation for the future use of the goods yard.

Simone De-Gale, Architectural Drawing Designs “We will achieve your vision”.

 55. 55. Conclusions

The fulcrum will become a strong lever in maintaining and enriching a new cultural quarter in Shoreditch. The extent of its success is dependent on the strength of the final design proposal. It will adhere to ideal proportions of geometry and will undergo a rigorous set of testing for a beautiful design it deserves in the pinnacle point on Redchurch Street, a turning point between communities, lifestyle variations and presence.

Simone De-Gale, Architectural Drawing Designs “We will achieve your vision”.
