  • 1. The Pros and Cons of Self-Catering What Is Self-Catering? A self-catered holiday, also known as self-catering, is a holiday where you use a rental home as your accommodations rather than staying in a hotel or with family. Self-catering is becoming popular! This year alone, nearly 30% of British travelers chose a self-catered holiday over a typical holiday. But what’s making these holidays so popular, and are they really a good idea? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of self-catering holidays. Pros of Choosing Self-Catering Self-catering is especially popular because of the amount of money you can save by choosing to stay in a rental home instead of a hotel. Aside from saving money on the rental, you can also save a good deal of money by controlling your own food and drink costs. That means, instead of eating in a restaurant, you use the rental home’s kitchen to prepare your own meals. What a savings! There are plenty more advantages to self-catering than simply saving money! Self-catering, for example, means you are never on a schedule. Unless you want to be, of course! You can check in and out when you like, and can serve your meals when it is convenient for you. Self-catering also provides greater flexibility than hotel living. While staying in a rental home, you can have as few or as many people as you like. This means you can split the budget, and the duties, as many ways as you want! Cons of Choosing Self-Catering Any good thing comes with disadvantages! With self-catering, the primary disadvantage is that not every holiday destination is well prepared for self-catering. For example, traveling to certain countries could cause you to face difficulty in stocking your refrigerator and preparing meals. Not to mention, if you travel somewhere exotic, you may want to feast on the local flavor anyway! Because of this, you will want to be sure to research your destination. Are there places to shop for meal ingredients? Is the local food just too good to resist? These are things to keep in mind. Be sure, when researching your self-catered holiday, to check the home’s accommodations. Some rental homes or apartments do not have all the accommodations you may want, such as an oven or a washing machine. Make sure your rental home comes with everything you expect so that you are not disappointed. Is Self-Catering the Best Choice? A self catered holiday is certainly something you will remember forever! You will treasure the memories of feeling so at home while you were so far away from home. A self-catered holiday certainly isn’t for everyone, but if you love those little touches of the comforts of home and hate the atmosphere of hotel rooms, plus you love saving money, then a selfcatered holiday may just be the perfect holiday for you and your family.
