  • Earthquake Strikes
    • Quake struck Christchurch on Tuesday (Feb. 22) at 12:51 pm local time
    • 6.3 magnitude earthquake
    • Streets were very busy
    • Called country’s biggest disaster in 80 years
  • Results of Quake
    • 148 people have died, with 50 still missing
    • About 120 people were forced to be amputated in order to be rescued
    • estimated total cost of damage is about $12bn (£7.4bn), according to the Associated Press news agency
    • 80% of people in Christchurch w/out water
    • Increase in premature labor
    • At least a third of the buildings in Christchurch need to be demolished, along w/ 100s of suburban homes

    • Declared a national state of emergency
    • Imposed a curfew
    • Emergency shelters have been set up, schools closed
    • Spent Saturday speaking to families who lost loved ones
    • Mr. Key said the disaster "may be New Zealand's single most tragic event"
  • Worst Hit Building: Canterbury Television Building
    • Collapsed during quake, lift cavity caught on fire
    • More than 100 people may have died in the building
    • Many of the dead and missing were faculty and students at the King's Education school for English language students drawn from around Asia and elsewhere
    • On 23 February, police decided the damage was not survivable, and rescue efforts at the building were suspended
