The Wyckoff House or Pieter Claesen Wyckoff House is estimated to have been built in 1652. It is the oldest surviving example of a Dutch saltbox frame house in New York and when it was constructed, as Paley sums it up, "New York was New Amsterdam." Now New York City owns the place and operates it as a museum.

It was the first landmark designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1965, when the Commission was formed. In 1967 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. • Cultural events like summer concerts and an October Halloween Harvest festival are held here. There are lectures, weekend craft sessions, children’s story hours, and outdoor programs held on a large lawn.
  • 5. Programs Programs explore the diverse peoples of Brooklyn. They are all the social configurations of Brooklyn from a rural Dutch colonial farming settlement to a retreat for wealthy nineteenth century industrialists, to a haven for Jewish, Italian, and other immigrants in search of the American dream, to today’s urbanized hodgepodge of yentas, yuppies, Caribbean islanders, African-Americans and Eastern European immigrants.
