Statue of Liberty Presentation

  1. 1. STATUE OF LIBERTY An educational experience with OnBoard Sightseeing Tours New York City! http://newyorktours.onboardtours.com
  2. 2. Based on Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, The Statueof Liberty is one of the most well-known gifts received by theUnited States from France in the 1800s. Since the torch-bearingarm and the head of Lady Liberty were finished first, they wereactually displayed in an area of Manhattan, New York – nowknown as Madison Square Park – during the “CentennialExposition” in 1876, the United States’ first official World Fair.
  3. 3. Even though Lady Liberty was agift from France, it was agreedupon that the pedestal on whichshe sits was built in Americaand the actual sculpted pieceswere made in France.Eventually, after funds wereraised enough to complete thepedestal in America, thesculpture was shipped to thestates in numerous pieces.Once completed, New Yorkerscelebrated the appreciated giftwith the nation’s first established“ticker-tape” parade – thepopular parades often seen inmany movies, held forcandidacy of Nixon in 1960, andin honor of the Apollo 11Astronauts in 1969.
  4. 4. After the attacks on September 11th in 2001 the Statuewas closed for security measures and opened again in2009. The statue then closed again to add safetyinstallations within the Statue and base. The renovationlasted until October 28th, 2012. Unfortunately with thehavoc created by Super storm Sandy, the statue andisland have been completely closed off to the public byNational Park Services.
  5. 5. You can catch a pretty great glimpse of Lady Liberty from a yachtcruise or water taxi along the Hudson River to obtain outstandingimages of the structure.
