 Ratan Tata of the TATA group on being conferred

nearly a century old business.
• A dabbawalah is a person of Mumbai who
carries and delivers freshly made food from
home in lunch boxes to office workers.
• The corporate and businessmen are the main
customers for the dabbawalas.
 It has been claimed that the supply chain has
achieved a SIX SIGMA performance rating that is
99.9999% (i.e. the deliveries are made without
error, it is at CMMi level 6).

 10:30 – 11:20 : they load the wooden crates filled
with lunch boxes onto the goods compartment in
the train.
 11:20 – 12:30 : Unloading at the destination

 Re-arrangement of lunch boxes takes place as
per the destination area and destination building.
 1:15 – 2:00 Collection process where our friend has to
pick up the emptied boxes from the offices after an hour.
 2:00- 2:30 the team members meet for the segregation
as per the destination suburb
 2:30 – 3:30 The return journey by train where the group
finally meets up after the day’s routine of dispatching
and collecting from various destination offices.
 3:30 – 4:00pm
 The final sorting stage and dispatch takes place.
 The group meets up at origin station and they finally sort
out the lunch boxes as per the owner of each boxes.

 Name in “ Guiness Book of world Records”.
 Registered with Ripley’s “believe it or not”
 Visited by The Prince of Wales, Prince Charles during his

  • 17.  1:15 – 2:00 Collection process where our friend has to pick up the emptied boxes from the offices after an hour.  2:00- 2:30 the team members meet for the segregation as per the destination suburb  2:30 – 3:30 The return journey by train where the group finally meets up after the day’s routine of dispatching and collecting from various destination offices.  3:30 – 4:00pm  The final sorting stage and dispatch takes place.  The group meets up at origin station and they finally sort out the lunch boxes as per the owner of each boxes.

He was at awe when he was explained that technology was not employed for this job.  Later invited by Prince Charles to London  Sir Richard Branson, Chairman, Virgin Atlantic Airways, met them at the Church gate station in south Mumbai.
