  •                      Social  Message  Installation                                                  Packing  Tape                                                                        Sculpture  II                                              Mrs.  Duckworth     Social  issues  are  matters  that  directly  or  indirectly  affect  many  or  all   members  of  a  society  and  are  considered  to  be  problems,  controversies   related  to  moral  values,  or  both.    Social  messages  are  works  of  art,  music,   film  or  text  that  highlight  a  social  issue  with  an  intention  to  draw  attention  to   it  and  help  resolve  the  issue.     Collaboration  and  installation  were  important  aspects  of  the  Modern  Art   movement.    Artists  worked  with  others  and  had  people  help  them  create   artwork  that  made  statements  about  the  art  world  and  traditional  means  of   creation.    Many  artists  also  created  social  or  political  art  designed  specifically   for  one  location,  and  the  meaning  or  purpose  of  the  work  was  related  to  the   space  it  was  designed  for.       The  activity:     Using  clear  packing  tape,  you  will  work  alone  or  with  one  other  person  and  create  a  collaborative  3D   sculpture  designed  to  highlight  a  social  issue.           What  you’ll  do:   1. Review  a  PowerPoint  on  Installation  Art  and  Collaboration.   2. Look  at  examples  of  installation  art  made  from  clear  packing  tape.     3. Decide  if  you’re  going  to  work  alone  or  with  a  partner.     4. Brainstorm  a  list  (Worksheet  #1)  of  10  social  issues  you  could  create  an  installation  sculpture  for.     For  each  issue,  list  2-‐3  possible  locations  your  sculpture  could  be  installed.    NOTE:  You  may  not   actually  be  able  to  install  your  sculpture,  however,  if  it’s  something  you  would  like  to  pursue  we  can   work  together  to  see  if  it  is  possible.     5. Review  your  list  and  complete  Worksheet  #2  –  plan  out  details  for  4  ideas  from  Worksheet  #1   a. Social  Issue  –  Describe  the  social  issue  in  detail.    What  is  the  reason  for  it,  where  does  it  exist,   who  does  it  affect,  how  can  awareness  be  made  about  it,  etc?       b. Location  –  Where  would  a  sculpture  about  this  social  message  be  most  effective?    How  would   it  need  to  be  installed?  What  special  permissions  might  you  need  in  order  to  install  it?     c. Ideas  for  your  social  message  sculpture  –  think  about  the  following  things:    1.  Symbolism,   representation,  message  trying  to  be  conveyed.    2.  What  will  the  sculpture  look  like?    3.  How   can  the  social  message  be  made  clear  through  the  tape  sculpture?   d. Additional  elements  to  make  your  sculpture  unique  –  What  props,  materials,  or  ideas  could   you  add  to  the  tape  to  make  your  sculpture  more  interesting  or  meaningful?     6. Look  over  Worksheet  #2  and  decide  which  idea  is  your  best.       7. Find  reference  images  that  will  help  you  draw  and  sculpt  your  best  idea.   8. Develop  at  least  3  drawings  and  planning  sketches  to  visually  describe  how  your  sculpture  will  look   if  placed  in  the  location.    Use  your  references  to  help  develop  your  ideas.    This  is  Worksheet  #3.   9. Participate  in  a  demonstration  and  materials  workshop  on  creating  a  packing  tape  sculpture.     10. Create  your  final  sculpture  based  on  the  plans  you  worked  out  and  the  techniques  taught  in  class.     11. Add  finish  touches  to  your  sculpture,  and  if  possible,  install  it  in  the  location  you  have  chosen.         NOTE:  If  you  work  with  a  partner,  you  will  receive  an  individual  grade  and  a  group  grade  for  the  project.     Each  of  you  is  required  to  complete  this  brainstorming  packet  and  submit  it  when  the  project  is  complete.         Teamwork  and  enthusiasm  are  key!  Enjoy!   -‐  Mrs.  Duckworth
