“What’s Your Cup of Tea?” Ceramics I Final Project Mrs. Duckworth Your Ceramics I Final Challenge… Over the past weeks, you have created ceramic pieces using the pinch, coil and slab hand-‐building techniques. For this final project, you will brainstorm, research, sketch and plan a functional ceramic set that will incorporate at least two of the ceramics hand-‐building techniques in the process and final product. Phase 1 of this project is the idea development, research and planning. Phase 2 will be creating the project, completing the rubric, written Artist Statement and Reflection. Activity & Inspiration: You will randomly pick a word from “the hat”. Your challenge is to interpret that word into the visual form of a teacup and saucer using at least two of the ceramics hand-‐building techniques. What You Will Do: PHASE 1: 1. Review a PowerPoint and assignment sheet. 2. Review expectations and grading structures. 3. Complete planning steps on following pages… a. Pick word for your inspiration. b. Sketchbook Page 1: Brainstorm using lists and/or webs to explore a minimum of 10 different conceptual themes/ideas to base the style and design of your project on. c. Sketchbook Page 2: Develop several ideas through sketches and references. Your project must incorporate at least two hand-‐building techniques. d. Sketchbook Page 3: Develop your final idea through notes and final concept sketches. i. Complete three (3) detailed color drawings, from several angles, that will illustrate what your final piece will look like once completed. e. Planning Steps Page 4-‐5: Be sure to include planned detailed steps on the process and techniques you will use to create the final set. * Most of the sketchbook work will need to be done outside of class. Due Jan. 9th & 10th * PHASE 2: 1. Construct a ceramic tea cup and saucer, using your planning from Phase I, that clearly illustrates the word you drew from “the hat”. 2. Finish your tea cup and saucer using techniques and processes planned. 3. Submit your Sketchbook Pages, rubric, typed Artist Statement and Reflection with your project. * Please make sure that all pages have your complete name on them and are properly stapled together – the rubric is on top! *

Tips & Considerations: Ø Are your design concepts going to be more functional or sculptural? Ø Are you going to incorporate a conventional handle or non-‐conventional? Ø What shape will your cup and/or saucer be? Ø Will all of your parts be unified in design? Ø Will you apply design or draw on the surfaces? Ø What finish will you use? Ø Go beyond the expected and ordinary. This is a FINAL project…my expectations are high! Ø Craftsmanship, creativity and planning are keys to success. Ø Go back to your planning throughout process, but don’t be afraid to modify your plans if the piece is not turning out as you had hoped. Requirements: 1. Complete 5 full pages in sketchbook 2. Complete final piece using at least 2 hand-‐building techniques 3. Complete typed Artist Statement & Reflection 4. Develop the piece and solve problems independently This Final “Exam” Project is worth 20% of your overall grade for this course. This Final Project (both planning & creation) is worth 75% of final “exam” grade. The Open Note Exam (on January 24th & 25th) is worth 25% of final “exam” grade Important Things to Know: You will be required to conference with teacher to share sketchbook packet and progress. See calendar for due dates. This project is as a final exam – ideas and work should be original, no part can be turned in late, no make-‐ups, re-‐dos, or additional time and materials provided. You will be required to solve problems on your own. If any portion of project is not submitted by the due date, it will be calculated as a ZERO grade. This project should exemplify what you have learned about the medium and techniques of working with clay this semester.
