“What’s Your Cup of Tea?” Ceramics I – Final Project

The Significance of a Cup “Cups are some of the earliest vessels we encounter in our lives. Raising the cup to our mouth puts it close to our sense of sight, touch, and taste.” “Something different happens when an artist puts meaning into a cup. Whether it asks a question or makes a statement, the artists’ use of form, color, edge, material, firing process, surface design, etc. makes the vision of the artist concrete for the user.” Arbuckle

The Function of a Handle “Handles should allow the user to lift and hold the cup easily. A handle that is too large seems awkward, too small may force the fingers next to a hot cup.” Arbuckle

The Purpose of a Saucer “A saucer, like framing a picture, creates a space in which your cup exists. It may be just bigger than the cup, and provides a tray with which to carry a hot cup, or it may be a large environment that allows room for sugar cubes, spoon, or lemon slices.” Arbuckle

Your Final Challenge For this final project, you will brainstorm, research, sketch and plan a functional ceramic set (cup & saucer) that will incorporate at least two of the ceramics hand-building techniques in the process and final product.

Activity & Inspiration You will randomly pick a word from “the hat”. Your challenge is to interpret that word into the visual form of a cup and saucer using at least two of the ceramics hand-building techniques.

Expectations & Grading This project should be treated as a final exam. Ideas and work should be your own and original. You must show all of your planning and concept development You will be required to solve problems on your own. No part can be turned in late, no make-ups, re-dos, or additional time and materials provided. If any portion of project is not submitted by the due date, it will be calculated as a ZERO grade. The due date must be strictly adhered to. This class ends January 27th. Understand and take into consideration the drying time and the 2 firings that your piece will require

Grading Breakdown This Final “Exam” Project is worth 20% of your overall grade for this course. This Final Project (both planning & creation) is worth 75% of final “exam” grade.  Planning & Construction is worth 40 points  Artist’s Statement & Reflection is worth 16 points The Open Note Exam (on January 24th & 25th) is worth 25% of final “exam” grade  50 Question Multiple Choice is worth 50 points

What You Will DoPHASE 1: Complete planning steps in packet…  Pick word for your inspiration.  Sketchbook Page 1: Brainstorm using lists and/or webs to explore a minimum of 10 different conceptual themes/ideas to base the style and design of your project on.  Sketchbook Page 2: Develop several ideas through sketches and references. Your project must incorporate at least two hand- building techniques.

What You Will DoPHASE 1: Complete planning steps in packet…  Sketchbook Page 3: Develop your final idea through notes and final concept sketches. Complete three (3) detailed color drawings, from several angles, that will illustrate what your final piece will look like once completed.  Planning Steps Page 4-5: Be sure to include planned detailed steps on the process and techniques you will use to create the final set.

What You Will DoPHASE 2: Construct a ceramic tea cup and saucer, using your planning from Phase I, that clearly illustrates the word you drew from “the hat”. Finish your tea cup and saucer using techniques and processes planned. Submit your Sketchbook Pages, rubric, typed Artist Statement and Reflection with your project. * Please make sure that all pages have your complete name on them and are properly stapled together – the rubric is on top! *

Tip & Considerations Are your design concepts going to be more functional or sculptural? Are you going to incorporate a conventional handle or non-conventional? What shape will your cup and/or saucer be? Will all of your parts be unified in design? Will you apply design or draw on the surfaces? What finish will you use? Go beyond the expected and ordinary. This is a FINAL…expectations are high! Craftsmanship, creativity and planning are keys to success. Planning is Essential !!!
