STRESS IS …. Stress is body’s way of responding to any kind ofdemand. When people feel Stressed by something theirbodies react by releasing them into the blood. These chemicals give people mere energy andstrength, which can be a good thing, if their stress is causedby physical danger, But, this can also be a bad thing if theirstress is in response to something emotional and there isno outlet for this extra energy and stress. Many different things can cause stress from physical(such as tear of something dangerous) to emotional things(such as worry over family or job).
The connection between stress and vision is really quitevast. Stress and vision are not only inseparable from eachother but each is inseparable from our overall responses:emotionally, mentally, physically, physiologically andfunctionally. The visual system is intimately connected with thenervous system and endocrine system by way of the eyeswhich through the light receptors of the retinas sendelectrical messages not only to the visual cortex but also tothe hypothalamus and pineal glands.
Perception is inseparable from the stressresponse. What we perceive and how we handleany given situation involves the whole person. Astress response begins when we perceive anystimulus as overwhelming or as a threat.Thesympathetic branch of the autonomic nervoussystem (ANS) initiates the stress response, alsoknown as the fight or flight response.
The sympathetic responds during arousal,exercise and whenever we stand up. A prolongedstate of arousal, with the sympathetic systemengaged, can lead to adrenal exhaustion andfatigue. Chronic pupil dilation and light sensitivityare indications of a system that is sympatheticdominant. If a pupil does not hold a contractionwhen light shines toward it, this indicates arousal orover stimulation of the adrenals.
THEN HOW DO STRESS AFFECT EYE…..??? While many of us experience stress on a day-to-daybasis, many people don’t realize that stress can causeserious eye problems. The eyes are closely connected to the brain and thenervous and endocrine systems. Because perception andhow we handle stressful situations involves our brains andour actions, they are inseparable from stress. This stressresponse first starts when we are in a situation that thebrain perceives as danger and stimulates the secretion ofadrenaline.
EFFECTS OF STRESS ON EYE…… As if dry eye-conducive environments and blinding computermonitors weren’t bad enough, simple stress/anxiety stands as anotherirritating cause of damage to the eyes. Although it is very much possible (and common) to experienceimproved eyesight when working under the conditions of chronic stress,do not be fooled by these temporary experiences of supervision. Stress naturally produces an adrenaline rush that orders yourbody to compensate for anything that may be lacking – includingeyesight. This false use of “emergency mode” may prove incrediblyhelpful in the short-term, but in the long-term can add to and lead todepression, increased moods of irritability, memory loss, headaches,and disruption of your regular sleeping patterns.
Stress additionally has a tendency to overload and impair thefunctions of the hypothalamus, the emotional headquarters of your brainthat is responsible for, in layman’s terms, maintaining what you mightconsider to be your sanity. Adrenaline rushes also increase the odds ofbeing struck by Glaucoma due to a sharp increase in intraocular pressure. This intraocular pressure is commonly known to distort vision and,in some severe cases, even cause hallucinations or extrasensoryexperiences. Narrow vision and decreased peripheral vision are alsoeffects that may be a result of chronic stress. One should be cautious ofanxiety-induced high blood pressure that is capable of causing furtherproblems to your eyesight and overall eye health if combined with othercommon diseases.
Tension headaches, another product of this increasein pressure, can be particularly troublesome to the occipitalregion due to stress. These headaches are localized behindthe eyes and are known to be more difficult to subdue thanthe everyday headache or migraine.

AT THE GLIMPSE….. The gift of sight, while key to the human experience, can be afragile one. Sometimes it takes a little effort and awareness topreserve our eyesight. In general, avoid staring at computer screens for longperiods of time, overworking when unnecessary and consider lookinginto lifestyle changes that could significantly reduce your chances ofexperiencing these symptoms. For some, this may be as simple astaking the train instead of driving to work; for others, this could meansignificant life changes pertaining to career choice, location andfamily/friend lives. Assessment of your stress levels and its effects onyour body should be thoroughly examined by your physician, eyedoctor, or therapist.
