According to the latest statistics from a survey by the MetLife
Foundation and The Partnership at Drugfree.org, almost 25
percent of all teenagers have abused a prescription medication in
their lifetime. This is a 33 percent increase in just four years.
Of the reasons teenage medicine abuse has continued to increase
is because of the lax approach by both parents and caregivers. In
fact, almost a third of all parents suggest that stimulants such as
Adderall or Ritalin may help improve a teen’s academic
performance, even if the child does not suffer from attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The study found that most parents
are not safeguarding their medication or getting rid of unused medications properly, nor are
they effectively communicating the dangers of prescription abuse.
Worrying Developments in Teen Rx Drug Abuse
What is the reasoning behind these abused prescriptions? Now that this has become ‘normal’
behavior among teens, how many kids are actively using these substances? What do parents
need to be aware of?
24 percent of teens admit to having abused or misused a prescription medication
once in their lifetime. This was 18 percent just four years ago. This means that
almost 5 million teens admit to Rx abuse.
23 percent of teens believe that their parents would be less upset with them if they
were caught abusing substances without a doctor’s prescription when compared to
being caught using illicit street drugs.
20 percent of the teenagers who abuse Rx medications admit to having started
using before they were 14 years old.
27 percent of the surveyed teens believe that abusing and misusing prescription
drugs is safer than using street drugs.
33 percent of the teens believe that it is acceptable behavior to deal with physical
pain, illness, or injury by using prescription drugs that were not prescribed to them.
Almost 2.7 million teens (one in eight) has abused Adderall or Ritalin at least once in
their lifetime.
About 1.9 million teens (9 percent) admit to abuse of these stimulants in the last six
months. This is up from 6 percent just four years ago.
It
is clear that the acceptance of Rx substance abuse is relatively high. It has become
‘normalized’ behavior amongst teenagers. There is also a misconception that these
substances are somehow less dangerous.
An Increase in Stimulant Abuse
While the abuse of painkillers is slowly flattening out, teen abuse of stimulants such as
Adderall and Ritalin has become a key area of concern. The statistics found the following:

is clear that we have to re-evaluate the way that we deal with prescription medication
throughout the country. Before being placed on stimulant medications, it is important that the
recipient receive a thorough assessment. When it comes to developing a comprehensive
ADHD management plan, these prescription drugs should only be a single component
instead of the ‘entire treatment’.
It is important that teenagers are made aware of the fact that we are not sure how these
stimulant medications will affect the still-developing brains of adolescents who do not have
ADHD. What we do know is that there are substantial side effects with the use of these
substances, one of the primary reasons that people need a prescription in the first place.
