Siemon: Cabling a better view

  1. 1. Cabling a better view Moving analogue applications to an IP network offers big advantages, bringing new and valuable possibilities. Graeme Stoker of Siemon considers the challenge. As volumes and types of IP network traffic change, so does expectation. With traditional data, users had no care about such things as response times, as long as there was one. But the addition of IP versions of familiar services, for example telephony, comes with expectations, and these will only be fulfilled with careful planning of the physical infrastructure, based on understanding… Traditional IP data is very tolerant and time can be afforded to ensure accuracy and completeness before rendering to a user. Building management systems such as door access are even more tolerant, but video is real time and when combined with voice, even small amounts of signal delay (latency), jitter, or noise can be catastrophic. Much is done above the physical layer to deal with these challenges, for example traffic shaping and Quality of Service (QoS) schemes, but the same effort is rarely made concerning the cabling infrastructure. Analogue devices, such as surveillance cameras, previously connected by generic coaxial cabling, are moving onto the network and other IP applications such as IP data recorders, visual recognition, building access control and IP based television services (IPTV) are following.
