    1. METALS AND THEIR USES Objectives To know a range of metals that have specific uses. Metals are found in the Earth, sometimes as elements and sometimes in an ore. Make a list of keywords used in the learning objectives www.sciencetutors.zoomshare.com
    2. METALS AND THEIR USES
      • Starter
      • List uses of metals in daily life
      • 2. Why are alloys different from ordinary metals like Iron and zinc
    3. A range of metals used for specific purposes. Look at these pictures and suggest the names of the metals used.
    4. What metal is used for building aircrafts and why? www.sciencetutors.zoomshare.com
    5. Why is aluminium or steel used in making cooking pots? Suggests why iron is not a good metal for making cooking pots www.sciencetutors.zoomshare.com
    6. METAL ORES
      • What is a metal ore?
      • This is the concentration of metals or minerals (solid elements or compounds) which occurs naturally in the Earth’s crust.
      • A mineral which contains a reasonably high percentage of a metal for economic extraction is called a metal ore.

    7. METAL ORES
      • An ore is a naturally occurring source (native state) of metals that can be extracted for economic reasons
      www.sciencetutors.zoomshare.com
    8. Examples of metals extracted from Metal Ores
      • Gold
      • Platinum
      • Silver and Copper
      • Bauxite (Al2O3)
      • Haematite (Fe2O3)
      • Rutile (TiO2)
    9. METALS REACTING WITH ACIDS
      • Objectives
      • To know that some metals react with dilute acid to form a salt and hydrogen gas.
      • Tasks
      • Name three acids commonly used in the science lab
    10. REACTANTS AND PRODUCTS Metal + Acid —— > Salt + Hydrogen gas Below is the general equation for the reaction metals with acid www.sciencetutors.zoomshare.com Products Reactants
    11. REACTIONS WITH ACIDS
      • Describe the reaction that occurs between a metal and dilute acid in terms of reactants and products.
      www.sciencetutors.zoomshare.com Product 2 Product 1 Acid Metal
    12. Copy and answer starter Questions (This is a six minutes task)
      • Do all metals react with acid?
      • List four metals that will not replace hydrogen in an acid?
    13. WILL GOLD REACT OR NOT?
      • What would happen if a gold ring was dropped into acid by mistake?
      www.sciencetutors.zoomshare.com
    14. TEST FOR
      • How could I test for Hydrogen gas? Students to do hydrogen pop test.
    15. Test for Hydrogen gas
      • Suggest how you would detect and test for Hydrogen gas from the reaction between Aluminium and Sulphuric acid.
      • Can you write down a word equation and the symbol equation for this reaction
      +
      • FACTS ABOUT HYDROGEN GAS
      • Hydrogen is colourless and odourless (no smell)
      • Hydrogen can be collected by upward delivery because it is less dense than air.
      • Hydrogen reacts explosively with oxygen in a highly exothermic reaction.
      • Hydrogen makes a small pop explosive sound with a lighted wooden splint. It burns with characteristic ‘pop’
      • Hydrogen has no effect on litmus paper-no colour change.

    16. PATTERNS OF REACTIVITY
      • Objectives
      • There are patterns in the reactivity of metals and dilute acid that can be used to make predictions about how a metal will react.
