Why use anti-reflective coatings on solar cover glass?
About 4% of the light hitting the glass of a solar modules is reflected and thus lost for electricity production.
Reflections can be reduced and thus light transmission can be increased by using antireflective (AR) coatings.
The higher electricity output results in a reduction of the cost per Wp!
‘ Traditional’ AR coatings are either expensive or have to compromise on the balance optical vs mechanical properties.
DSM has developed a unique single layer AR coating which minimizes reflection without compromising on the durability.
DSM’s AR coating technology is marketed under the brand-name KhepriCoat™ and is available via a licensing model
Why is KhepriCoat™ different from traditional AR coatings?
In contrast to ‘traditional’ AR coatings, the DSM AR coating has a closed silica-based structure with a high internal nano-porosity
Voids are formed in the coating layer by using core-shell particles with a silica shell
The voids between the particles are completely filled with a solid silica-based binder giving a very strong bond
The closed and smooth surface for excellent durability, mechanical properties and cleanability

KhepriCoat is a very versatile AR coating technology
The technology is suitable for use on all types of PV and solar thermal modules
The coating can be applied 1- and 2-sided
DSM’s AR coating can be applied by various coating technologies, like dip, roll, spray or slot-die coating
DSM’s AR coating can be applied on both (ultrawhite) float glass and structured/patterned glass
The coating can be cured in the temper step

KhepriCoat™: DSM’s AR coating for solar cover glass Transmission curves for 2-sided coated 4 mm ultrawhite float glass
Maximum gain in transmission up to 8%
Average gain in transmission up to 6% (depending on the wavelength range) at perpendicular angle
KhepriCoat™: DSM’s AR coating for solar cover glass Transmission curves for 1-sided coated 4 mm float and patterned glass
Maximum gain in transmission (perpendicular) up to 4% for 1-sided coatings
Average gain in transmission up to 3% (depending on wavelength range)
Optical Performance: Angle-Dependent Transmission
The gain in transmission increases at higher angles of incidence to almost 10% (green line)!
The highest gain in transmission is obtained at angles above 30 degrees
Performance of PV-modules coated with KhepriCoat™
Module tests performed at Photovoltaik Institut Berlin (www.pi-berlin.com)
Passed all tests according to IEC 61215 (damp-heat, humidity-freeze, thermal cycling and others)
TüV certification for commercial modules with KhepriCoat™ AR coating obtained
No degradation visible during damp-heat test for 2000 hours (twice the IEC test norm)
Up to 3% performance increase at normal angle of incidence (flash test)
up to 5% performance increase at 60 degrees angle of incidence (flash test)
KhepriCoat TM was used for the world record 17% efficiency for multi-crystalline Si solar panels Page
Khepri is the name of one of the major Gods in ancient Egyptian mythology. He was believed to push the sun across the sky and is responsible for the dawn. This name was chosen as sunrise and sunset are the times when the benefits of KhepriCoat™ offer the highest yield increase versus normal solar glass.
