  • INSTILL GOOD READING HABITS IN YOUR KIDS
Tips from SavingsAce to Teach Your Kids the Joys of Reading
  • WHY HAVE KIDS STOPPED READING?
Kids today don’t seem to read at all, due to:
The variety of channels and shows on television
The accessibility of other forms of entertainment on the computer
High-end game stations and portable gadgets
However, the ironic part is that adults do exactly the same things – they watch television and sit at the computer all the time.
The PSPs are probably replaced with BlackBerrys, but the end effect is the same
  • GREAT IDEAS TO ENCOURAGE READING IN CHILDREN
SavingsAce helps you understand how you can teach your kids to read and urges you not to force them at any stage – it will only have the opposite effect!!
  • Start early
Introducing your offspring to books should happen even before the child has learned to read
Many parents don’t start promoting good reading habits until the child is already in school and familiar with the alphabet
SavingsAce knows that kids who are read to from books grow up to be stronger readers than those who aren’t
An early demonstration of the fun and entertainment that books can provide makes it easier to develop good reading habits
  • Create interest
It’s essential to make reading a fun activity
Tap into the child’s interests with your book selections
Get a book on Mighty Machines if your kid likes machines
A book on dinosaurs may be a good place to start if he’s interested in animals and nature
  • Make it interactive
You may have to start by reading to your child
However, you can move on to reading with your child, making the experience more and more interactive as you go along
Ask questions about pictures and words you come across
Soon, your little one will be identifying words in a way you might have never thought possible
  • Schedule it!
Set aside a specific time for your child to read to make it a habit
The exact time should be chosen based on the child’s schedule and maturity
Bedtime is a great time for most kids
Just prior to dinner or after coming back from play or school also works well
  • AGE-APPROPRIATE
SavingsAce suggests that the books you choose should be age-specific
This applies to both content and quantity
For younger kids, there should be no more than a couple of short sentences per page with elaborate pictures
The younger ones can enjoy something that’s more descriptive and interesting to read with fewer pictures too
  • THESE TIPS ARE EFFECTIVE … BUT DON’T PUSH YOUR CHILD INTO ANYTHING
SavingsAce suggests that you keep trying while setting a good example by reading for your own pleasure!
