An evaporator is a device used to turn the liquid form of a chemical into its gaseousform. The liquid is evaporated, or vaporized, into a gas. An evaporator is used in an air-conditioning system to allow a compressed cooling chemical, such as Freon or R-410A,to evaporate from liquid to gas while absorbing heat in the process. It can also be usedto remove water or other liquids from mixtures. The process of evaporation is widelyused to concentrate foods and chemicals as well as salvagesolvents. In theconcentration process, the goal of evaporation is to vaporize most of the water from asolution which contains the desired product. In the case of desalination of sea water, thereverse purpose applies; evaporation removes the desirable drinking water from theundesired product, salt.
An air conditioning condenser works in conjunction with an airconditioning compressor. The unit is powered on, and then therefrigerant--a chemical liquid that easily converts to gas--is circulatedto the compressor. The refrigerant is compressed, forcing therefrigerants molecules to become compacted. The refrigerant, thendevelops increased energy, which, in turn causes it to increase intemperature. As a result, the refrigerant changes into a gas form thatflows into the condenser.
