What is a smartphone?<br />A phone that is more technologically advanced than a basic phone.<br />Smartphones have more advanced computing ability and can be thought of as a handheld computer integrated into a mobile phone. <br />According to a study by ComScore, in 2010 over 45.5 million people in the United States owned smartphones.<br />
History of the smartphone<br />The first smartphone was called “Simon”.<br />It was created by IBM in 1992 and sold in the US from 1993. <br />It was a mobile phone, basic computer, pager and fax machine.<br />It cost $899 in 1993.<br />
History of the smartphone<br />The first popular smartphone was the Nokia Communicator. <br />Released in 1996.<br />The phone looked like a normal (but very big) phone on the outside but opened to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. <br />The Communicator was able to connect to the Internet (VERY slowly...)<br />

Smartphones in business<br />Many business people use smartphones as an important tool for their career.<br />You can sign in to the office, check your email, schedule meetings and surf the Internet while you are out of the actual office.<br />In the last election Barack Obama used his BlackBerry to arrange his appointments and keep in touch with his team while he was on the road.<br />
