  • 3. DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE IIT Guwahati is one of the leading technical institutions of the country. The student strength is just over 4400 in August 2012. Currently there are 310 faculty. About 570 papers were published in journals and about 580 were presented in conferences in 2011-12. The number of PhD students on campus is nearly 1000. There are more than 350 sponsored projects being undertaken at pre- sent. There is therefore a strong R&D atmosphere in the Institute. This enhances the teaching process. IIT Guwahati is committed to excellence inProf. Gautam Barua all spheres of its activities. It is conscious that the brandDirector IIT sustains itself mainly due to this commitment toIIT Guwahati excellence. We always strive to do better. The students graduating from this institute are all very bright. They have entered the institute by proving themselves in their earlier place of learning and by successfully com- peting with their peers. Our institute provides them quality education both in the classroom, and outside it. We have extensive facili- ties for sports and cultural activities. We know we have to mould the bright minds so that they can tackle the challenges of nature, of society, and of the marketplace. Our emphasis is on education, rather than training. So prospective employers may find that a particular student is not up-to-step with some new technology or method- ology but also they should assess if the student’s funda- mentals are strong or not. If the answer is yes, than he or she will be able to pick up the necessary details without any problems. We are also aware that there is scope for improving the soft skills of students. We are doing what we can. At the same time, we must recognise that since the students are bright, they upgrade these skills very fast while on the job. I invite all prospective employers of our students to visit IIT Guwahati and to participate in the on-campus place- ment process. 3 INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY GUWAHATI, PLACEMENT BROCHURE

In the last 17 years the Institute has grown into a full-fledged premier technological Institute. The fourteenth batch of undergraduate and the thirteenth batch of postgraduate students have received their degrees in May 2012. The graduating students – starting from the very initial batch – have shown tremendous potential and skill in their respective fields of study and they have also fared very well in terms of having a well-rounded personality. It isn’t surpris- ing that recruiters from varied fields have responded very enthusiastically and rated our students very high. Their abili- ties are well attested by the excellent reports we receive from the recruiting companies. Prof. Natesan Srinivasan Faculty In-charge The Institute provides valuable support by offering informa- Training and Placement tion and guidance to the graduating students registered for Cell placement. • 18. FAQs 1) How well is Guwahati connected with the rest of the country? Ans. Guwahati, which is the gateway for North East India, is well connected by air, rail and road with the rest of the country. There are direct air services from/to Mum- bai, New Delhi and Kolkata with connectivity to all major cities in the country and direct train services from/to all the metropolises and other major cities. 2) How do we reach the institute? Ans. The institute is a 45 minute drive from the airport and prepaid taxis can be availed of directly at the airport. Depending on the available transport resources the placement cell has at hand and provided the visiting company intimates the placement cell about its schedule for arrival and stay on the campus, transport could be provided to the delegates from the company. The institute also has a bus service with buses ply- ing from the institute to the city centre and back at regular intervals. 3) Where will we be accommodated? Ans. Subject to availability of rooms in the institute guest house, accommodation could be arranged at a nominal rate for delegates from a company if they do intimate their requirements to us well in advance. 4) When does the placement session begin and for how long does it continue? Ans. The Placement Session would begin on the 1st of December 2012 and continue till May 2013. Companies are encouraged to visit the campus before the placement session begins to give Pre-Placement Talks to our students and introduce them to the job profiles and job culture of their company. This does have a direct bearing on the interest shown by students when the company visits the campus later for placements. 5) We are under the impression that we can recruit students only if their discipline is related our Industry. Is this so? Ans. No, the institute imposes no restrictions in this regard. Companies can opt to recruit students from any department or discipline.18 INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY GUWAHATI, PLACEMENT BROCHURE
