  • We’ve worked 190k customers worldwide. There is a three stage journey that customers will go through and most customers have probably gone through first phase – IT virtualization. The primary draw for that phase is cost savings, with 50-60% of capex saved on this first phase. What’s interesting: they learn something. That applications run better virtualized. More reliable, higher quality of service. That pulls people into phase 2 – business production. Customers tells us that MS Exchange. Sharepoint. Run betterOracle databases. Mission critical info systems. Customers achieve high availability, DR at a fraction - that becomes true value prop for phase 2. And our average customer is here at this phase.Phase 3 changes again – once you hit levels of virtualization of 60% or more, customers see incredible flexibility – and they see that it leads to IT agility, which then leads to business agility. Value moves from cost to quality to business agility.Critical to this entire journey: everything based on open standards, interop. Most choice in HW. OS. Apps and app frameworks. Desktop clients. Do this by pushing and driving ind standards to ensure freedom of choice and interopOVF. Pushed – now an ANSI standard for portability.vCloud API – announced last year. For how to manage across crowds. In hybrid, have to have freedom of choice of cloud providers
  • Having spent the last 10 years managing Windows desktops and getting good at it, there are new animals in that zoo – non PC non Windows form factors.  I’m willing to bet 10-20% of you have an iPad device. You know who you are. And you’re taking it into business meetings. There’s someone in the corner tapping an iPad. IT didn’t ask for it – but it’s there. So there is increasing heterogeneity in devices – and IT have to live within that set of constraints and deliver a secure, manageable, coherent environment. So we believe there is a third locus of innovation – on that speaks to the heterogeneity and one that speaks to the management and control. The Windows desktop did traditionally two things – it was the interface to two things – it was the UI to a particular OS – it was also the conduit or mechanism by which IT equips users with capabilities. IT drops apps / files on your desktop – that’s how they mediate your acesss to app and info you need. Those two notion sh have to float apart – the conduit by which they provide access to capabilities – have to float away from a particular device. We cannot keep pace with the change of devices. Steve Jobs will sell you a new iPad every 6 months. IT has to allow users the pleasure and enjoyment – but has to maintain control. So this is the third layer of innovation needed.
  • Enables private and hybrid cloudsGives customers the ability to build secure private clouds that dramatically increase datacenter efficiency and business agility. Coupled with VMware vSphere, the foundation for cloud computing architectures, VMware vCloud Director the way IT delivers and manages infrastructure services and the way users access and consume these services by pooling virtual infrastructure resources and delivering them to users as a catalog-based service
  • Server virtualization gave us the server cloud  Servers became interchangeable resources. Xsigo virtual I/O enables the infrastructure cloud  Any network and storage can be connected to any server at any time. Data centers have multiple network and storage resourcesServer virtualization lets you run any app on any machine. But that means that every machine potentially needs connectivity to every resource. Xsigo lets you connect whichever network or storage is needed, without the need to massively scale connectivity -- cards, cables, and switch ports.
  • Businesses are moving to the cloud—quickly. An IDC study found that 70 percent of businesses are considering or already using private clouds.* A Forrester study found that business is adopting cloud 5 times faster that IT operations.** Why the rush to cloud? Business users recognize the cloud’s advantages in speeding innovation, accelerating business processes, and reducing time to revenue. The idea of going to a portal to request a service that is instantly provided has innate appeal. It’s a quick. And it only takes a credit card if you’re using public cloud services like those from Salesforce and Google. Enterprise IT executives aren’t entirely comfortable with the rush to cloud-bases services. They cite well-founded concerns about the challenges of maintaining security, service levels, and governance seamlessly across the entire IT value chain. They also want to be sure the decisions they make today about cloud technology suppliers don’t prevent them from innovating in the future. It comes down to this: Cloud adoption will stall in the enterprise unless we can quickly address a number of critical challenges. And there are additional barriers to cloud adoption …. 79% concerned about VENDOR LOCK IN75% worried about cloud PERFORMANCE AND AVAILABILITY70% of CIOs say cloud data SECURITY is a major concern63% concerned about integrating internal and external services*IDC Survey, Cloud Computing Attitudes, Doc.#223077, April 2010** You're Not Ready For Internal Cloud, Forrester Research, Inc., July 2010
  • To succeed in the era of the Instant-On Enterprise, we need to rethink the role of the CIO and of IT. We are moving from IT as a sole “supplier” or builder of services, to IT becoming the builder AND the broker of IT services. This means we now not only need to create world-class, reliable services inside the data center. We also need to create a core competency in aligning business needs with the optimal mix of internally and externally available services and then seamlessly blend them into a reliable, secure, and compliant end-to-end experience. In this new world, the CIO needs to be able to source and consume the services from the market. To make this happen, you need to build a network of trusted suppliers that can be relied upon to deliver services at a predictable price and level of performance.CIOs also need to build a capability to act as an internal service provider, matching the transparency and flexibility of externally available services for those areas where either economies of scale, competitive advantage, risk, or compliance mean that it makes more sense to provide their own services. No matter whether they seek to leverage public or private cloud services, both business and IT processes require transformation if they are to maximize the benefits of cloud technologies and ready the enterprise for accelerated innovation and improved agility. Finally, CIOs need to manage and secure the entire IT value chain using the same consistent, seamless tools and processes. Otherwise, they risk creating silos that introduce cost, complexity, and risk to hybrid environments.
  • This is a high level framework to begin to understand what are the key enabling functions needed for new hybrid cloud delivery models.Portal – CatalogOrchestration – AutomationSecurityCommon across private, virtual private, public and traditional IT models.
  • Here are some of the key things that a private cloud should deliver:Unified delivery and control of services across cloud and traditional IT environmentsSupport for private, public, and hybrid cloud environmentsSupport for a broad ecosystem of applications, leading hypervisors, and multiple operating systemsAutomated application to infrastructure lifecycle managementScalability to meet unpredictable business demandsBilling End-to-end securityHP is uniquely positioned to deliver on every element of this model today. We have a more complete portfolio than anyone else in the industry. We have a broad partner ecosystem that enriches our cloud solutions with leading applications, leading hypervisors, and leading operating systems. But there’s more. We know that our customers are worried that building private clouds will be a long, complicated process. We take a lot of time and complication out of the equation with our modular building blocks and pre-integrated solutions. HP can absolutely address these issues better than anyone else in the industry.
