3. Jim: I was devastated after my ex girlfriend‟s
mother, Sara, accused him of sexually molesting his
4-year-old daughter, Katie.
Jim
“Once when I was putting Katie to bed, I saw her touching her
vaginal area, and I asked, „Katie, what are you doing?' and she
said, „My daddy do that.‟ I couldn‟t believe what she was saying,”
says Katie‟s grandmother, Sara. “So, I called [her mother], Latia. I
was just shocked.”
4. “I didn‟t believe what my mom was telling me,”
Latia says. “I was in denial. I didn‟t want to believe
he would do something like that.”
“I‟ve never touched my daughter inappropriately.
Jim I‟ve never kissed my daughter inappropriately. These
accusations are totally false,” Jim explains.
“It feels like somebody stabbed me in my heart,” Sara
cries. “My granddaughter is suffering. For what? Why?
Because Jim decided to be selfish. I think Jim should
pay for what he did. He needs to spend some time in
prison. He doesn‟t need to do this to any other child.”
Sara
5. Now, a year since he‟s last seen his daughter, Jim says he‟ll do
anything to prove his innocence.
“Why did you want to be here today?” Dr. Phil asks
the father.
“I wanted to be here,” Jim says, pausing, as he holds back
tears, “I wanted to be here today to prove that I would
never do anything like this to my daughter. I love my
daughter. That is my world. She is everything to me, and
for them to accuse me of something of this magnitude, I
just don‟t understand.”
6. “So, you‟re saying that at no time in your life,
no time in this child‟s life, have you ever had
inappropriate contact with her?” Dr. Phil asks.
“I‟ve never had inappropriate contact
with my daughter,” Jim firmly replies.
7. Dr. Phil reminds him that he takes
allegations of child sexual abuse very
seriously. “You‟ve seen this show, you know
how I feel about this, and if you don‟t
know, let me tell you: I do begin this with a
bias, and it is a bias against you because
this has to be what I call a false-positive
situation. You hear in the criminal system
that someone is innocent until proven
guilty. Well, this is a flip-flop in my opiion.
If someone comes to me with an allegation
that a child has been
hurt, neglected, abused or in any way
exploited, the system has to be
correct, [until we] prove it wrong.”
8. He tells Jim he intends to drill him on Sara's accusations for
Katie‟s sake. “I would rather investigate 100 people who
didn‟t do something wrong than fail to investigate someone
who did something wrong.”
Sara and Latia join Dr. Phil
onstage. Turning to
them, he explains that he
knows someone is
lying, and he plans to
determine who is really
telling the truth.
9. “Let me ask you something,” Dr. Phil says
to Latia, “you met Jim, you started dating
six years ago. You chose to form a
relationship with him. You chose to have a
baby with him. You chose to live with him.
Did you miss [your relationship] that badly?
Do you really believe this man has done
what you‟re accusing him of doing? Did you
miss it that badly? Are you that blind?”
“No,” Latia responds. “I say that he did it because
my daughter told me he did. I feel that I'd be a
horrible mother not to believe what my daughter
has told me. I feel that I'd be a horrible mother if I
did not automatically protect her after hearing
what she has told me.”
Latia
10. Dr. Phil tells Latia she made the
right decision by taking every
precaution to protect her child.
“We have to assume these
children are telling the truth, but
are you saying that because
that‟s what your mother told
you, or are you saying that
because that‟s what you
believe?” He notes that Sara
criticized her for not
immediately believing Jim
molested Katie. “So, are you
doing all this to please [your
mother] and escape her
criticism, or are you doing this
because you really believe he
molested your child?”
11. “I‟m doing this because my daughter told me
that‟s what he did,” Latia stammers.
Latia
“Do you really believe that?” Dr. Phil asks Latia.
He tells her that she sounds unconvinced, as if her
mother pressured her to defend the allegations.
Latia admits that Jim never displayed any signs of
abusive parenting. “I've never seen him harm Katie
in any kind of way, but my daughter told me this,”
she insists.
Latia
12. “Are you behind all this?" Dr. Phil asks
Sara. “Is this about, 'OK, I‟ll get you, you
son-of a-bitch?‟ Is that what we're talking
about here?"
Dr. Phil notes that Latia claims Jim tried to run
her over with a car and allegedly raped her. Jim
denies ever trying to run her over and says that
the rape allegations are absurd. “Why would you
try to get back with me if I raped you?” he asks
Latia.
The two break into a shouting match. “You don‟t
want to fess up to anything!” Latia screams. “I
don‟t understand why I‟m here.”
Latia
13. “We‟re here because of my daughter!” Jim
exclaims. “Not because I hurt you. It doesn‟t
matter what we went through because the
allegations that you‟re giving now are false."

14. Child Sexual Abuse Warning Signs and
Resources
If you're worried that your child is being
sexually abused, look for the following
possible warning signs:
•Changes in behavior:
withdrawal, fearfulness, crying without
provocation
•Loss of appetite or other eating problems
•Poorly explained injuries:
bruises, rashes, cuts, genital pain or bleeding
•
•Sudden reluctance to be alone with a certain
person
•
•Unusual interest in or knowledge of sexually
related matters; inappropriate expression of
affection
"They often won't tell you straight up that something is happening
to them, because they've been threatened, they may be The End
ashamed, or they may not want to talk to you about it," Dr. Phil
says. "Think about these warning signs and ask questions. Create a
dialogue if you're worried about what's going on with a child."
