  • There are three major approaches in performing data maintenance services. Depending on the data maintenance situation, any one or a combination of these approaches will be implemented.   1. Extract and Post Methodology - This approach is most commonly known as check-out/check-in, involves the copying of a portion of the system database records. In practical, this maintenance approach is most popular and preferred by many customers.   2. Remote Terminal Service - This approach involves the use of remote terminal technology. This approach allows real-time backlog and work order posting services directly on the customers GIS database.   3. Distributed Replication Technology - With this process, we set up a duplicate (replicated) system and make all changes directly into the system in real time.
  • Extract and Post Methodology This approach is most commonly known as check-out/check-in, involves the copying of a portion of the system database records. Changes are made on the extracted copy, and then the updated copy is sent back to the host database for posting. This approach, essentially follow the same process used the conventional conversion process. Each sector of the service area is periodically revisited, and the required updates will be made. In practical, this maintenance approach is most popular and preferred by many customers.
  • Remote Terminal Service This approach involves the use of remote terminal technology. This approach allows real-time backlog and work order posting services directly on the customers GIS database. Utilizing tools such as CitrixTMWinframeTM (included in Microsoft Windows 2000 (NT 5.0) as "Terminal Server") and a high-speed connection and update the data directly to the customer’s database. However, this approach may require areas to be locked for updates, those areas can be broken into smaller sections. Newer systems that enable object-level locking do not have this limitation, allowing updates to be performed in real-time. The live remote approach offers several advantages. It reduces the time that sections of the database are locked out of service -- or eliminates the lockout problem altogether. Updates can be made in a much more timely basis, enabling to work on a database that is continually more current than possible with traditional techniques.
  • Distributed Replication Technology With this process, we set up a duplicate (replicated) system and make all changes directly into the system in real time. The system's built-in conflict management capabilities assure consistency and database purity before the replicated changes are delivered to the customers core system.   The replication and caching functions of these systems can be used to update records automatically and track changes. Currently, this approach is limited to attribute editing rather than editing of spatial information.

  • Case Study 5: Data Maintenance for Tele Atlas Project Name : Tele Atlas Project Type : Offline Data Capture / Maintenance Duration No of people deployed : 110 Software used : DWS/TA Mapper Final Platform : DWS/TA Mapper Project Description: Since 1994, Infotech has been assisting Tele Atlas (Previously ETAK) for the creation of the data sets involving Street Mapping for the various cities of US to be sold as CD - ROMs. These are used for a wide range of GIS, Location-Based Services and In-Car Navigation solutions. The project is being executed on SUN Sparc workstations using proprietary software. The Aerial Photographs and its ortho rectified images received from Tele Atlas are being used for updating of the database continuously with associated attributes being attached to it. The project involves capturing of all streets, hydrology features, and rail network and attributing in DWS/TA Mapper software for entire USA using DOQQ/USGS Quads, DRG's and DOT maps.
