  • In spring 2006 IDC has asked more than 5.000 developers in 116 countries how they use open source software. 71% responded that they use open source software. 54% said that open source software is used in their organizations and half of the respondents said that the usage of open source software is growing in their companies. Taking the advantage of z/VM Linux on Mainframe can be a very attractive alternative to PC based development environments.
  • Who should use app armor? Any organization running mission critical applications on Linux Any organization needing high assurance against data compromise Any organization needing to demonstrate security assurance measures (e.g. for regulatory compliance) Any organization with hosted network applications
  • Commercial accountability : Novell is in the best position to support enterprises that are moving to Linux but still have to deal with multiple infrastructure technologies.Novell support options can be tailored to your company’s specific needs. You can access self-support resources, open occasional support incidents, select varying amounts of support coverage (12x5, 24x7 or weekends), contract for on-site support or even have Novell monitor and manage your systems remotely. Novell support personnel have expertise in a broad range of operating systems, including both SUSE Linux and Red Hat Linux as well as Windows, UNIX and NetWare. Reliability and uptime: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server delivers the robust enterprise-class reliability and scalability you need. It offers maximum uptime with support for multiple clustering technologies, including high-availability clustering, a parallel cluster file system, high-performance computational clusters and load-balancing clusters. SLES9 leads its competitors in the performance arena. NEC published a record TPC-C benchmark result for Oracle Database 10g running on Linux-based SMPs.The world-record TPC-C non-clustered Linux result of 683,575 transactions per minute (tpmC)— with a price/performance ratio of $5.99/tpmC— was achieved on a NEC* Express5800/Xd server with 32 Intel Itanium* 2 processors at 1.5 Ghz running Oracle Database 10g with SLES9. Stronger security :SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 is inherently secure. In January 2005, it achieved the highest evel of security and operations certification never achieved in the Linux market—Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 4+. AppArmor's unique application security features protect the OS and applications from the effects of attacks, viruses and malicious applications. Unlike SELinux (in Red Hat), it sets up in minutes, requires no coding and doesn't impact the applications it protects. Broader application support: Support, validation and certification for Linux, Apache, My SQL and PHP/Perl; Partnerships with leading over 1800 application provider; SLES9 offers broadest set of runtimes and language support; Includes Mono for .NET compatibility; SLES9 suppored by BEA, IBM and other J2EE players; Expanded relationship with JBoss for support and certifications Unbeable value: Only Novell offers attractive enterprise-wide Linux solutions for businesses of any size. Choose the support package and level of service that fit your needs.
  • We’ve focused on six major areas of investment for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10. XEN virtualization is critical because it lets you consolidate and run multiple applications on a single server without the performance impact of full virtualization. We’re the first enterprise to ship XEN virtualization, and we’ve also contributed significantly to the XEN virtualization product. You simply won’t find a more qualified provider. We’re also excited about major improvements we’ve made in deployment and management, including significant improvements in the YaST online configuration tool. We’ve completely CIM instrumented the entire server architecture, enabling SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to plug into existing management systems and provide real-time monitoring and measurement of what’s going on inside your Linux systems. We’ve simplified pattern deployments so that a simple point and click will get you access to a specific server. For example, a module inside SUSE Linux Enterprise Server called SAPINIT enables you to configure your SUSE Linux Enterprise Server optimally to run SAP on top of it. If you want to run SAP, simply choose the option to have an SAP server during installation and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server will automatically configure the optimal settings and install the necessary packages. Part of our quest to bring Linux to the heart of the enterprise required us make using Linux as safe as possible. We’ve employed several layers of protection to make this happen. AppArmor is an application profiling tool that enables you to monitor applications for non-characteristic behavior. We’re now in the process of getting SLES 10 EAL 4+ certified. We’ve included a variety of network detection and monitoring tools, including the Open Source SNORT technology. XEN virtualization keeps viruses from spreading to other power virtualized operating systems. The major technical advancements in SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 have finally provided a way to transition smoothly from UNIX. With the ability to scale up to 1024 CPUs and more than 10 terabytes of physical memory, you’ll retain all of the performance, scalability and reliability that you enjoyed with UNIX. We’ve also been busy working on our new hardware and update drivers. SLES 10 lets you go out to a hardware vendor site, download the new device drivers, and update them into the operating system without waiting for Novell to issue a new release of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. The last area of investment focus that I want to talk about today is Storage Foundation. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 includes the Oracle Cluster File System 2, the Enterprise Volume Manager Server, and the Heartbeat 2 High-Availability Code, which scales all the way up to 16 modes. These three components comprise the only complete, out-of-the-box clustered failover solution available. This makes SUSE Linux Enterprise Server the best engineered Linux server and the best choice for mission-critical workloads.
