  • The three certification programs are: Certified Associate in Project Management Project Management Professional Certificate of Added Qualification The recertification program changed for those PMPs whose cycle ended 31 December 2001. Many individuals did not understand the change and risk losing their PMP credential.
  • Exam should be available in July 2002. Rest of slide is self-explanatory.
  • “ Unique months” mean that you can only count a particular month once if you have two or more projects that you were working on during that month. However, you can use the hours from multiple projects that occur in the same month.
  • Contact hours are not identical to semester or quarter hours. Contact hours only include the time that the learner is a learning environment. Learning environment can either be face-to-face or distance learning. If the instruction hours are through distance learning, some type of program description that includes the number of hours required to complete the program are required.
  • Slide is self-explanatory. More information can be found in the various certification handbooks.
  • A role delineation study for the CAPM ™ exam will be available late second quarter/early third quarter of 2002.
  • Cost for the paper exam is less that than the fees shown. These fees are for the computer based testing that is done at the Prometric Testing Centers. Fee can be paid by check, money order, or credit card. If you wait until more than one year has passed to re-take the exam, you will have to reapply for the exam and pay the full fee. If you re-take the exam and fail it, you will have one year to submit the re-examination form and then another six months to take the exam once you receive your letter of eligibility.
  • If an individual takes the exam in July 2002 and the certificate is processed by PMI HQ on 15 July 2002, the individual’s certification period begins on this date, not the date that the exam was passed. Since the exam was passed in 2002, the fifth full calendar year would be 2007. Therefore, the certification is good from 15 July 2002 through 31 December 2007.
  • Slide is self-explanatory.
  • Refer to slide 4 for information on “unique” months. Refer to slides 6 and 7 for information on contact hours. One of the biggest changes in 2002 is that an applicant no longer has to provide proof of obtaining a bachelor’s degree or equivalent (copy of diploma or transcript) or a résumé.
  • Slide is self-explanatory.
  • Scenario based means that the test applicant is provided with a situation and asked to select the answer that is the best course of action to take. Therefore, the test applicant must fully understand the principles of project management instead of just memorizing definitions. There are two resource packages available through the PMI Bookstore. One is considered the “lite” pacakge. Both have a variety of books on different topics.
  • See slide 9 about the re-examination process.
  • Slide is self-explanatory. See slide 10 regarding how the length of certification is determined.
  • Slide is self-explanatory.
  • Future exams should have handbooks available during the fourth quarter of 2002. Resource packs will be available through the PMI bookstore.
  • Details are provided in the specific CAQ handbooks, which are available at the PMI Certification website.

  • Slide is self-explanatory.
  • Self-directed learning activities had initially been part of the PDP, now CCR. Many people submitted hundreds of hours for this category. As a result, the Certification Board Center Board of Directors removed this from the re-certification program. It was just revised on 1 January 2002 to allow 15 PDUs over their three-year certification cycle. If a PMP had submitted more than 35 PDUs in the self-directed learning category prior to 1 January 2002 will not have them reduced, but will not be able to claim any additional self-directed learning PDUs if they are in certification cycle. Additional information can be found on the “What’s New In Certification” section of the PMI Certification website. To be able to claim 5 PDUs per year for providing professional project management services, you must have a minimum of 1,500 hours for that year. If a PMP develops a presentation, they can claim PDUs every time that they give the presentation, not just the first time.
  • A database of REPs is available through the PMI website at http://www.pmirep.org. New Continuing Certification Requirements handbook will have information on how a PMP can claim PDUs for a partial term as a component officer. A PMP who have exceeded the requirement for 60 PDUs can carry over a maximum of 20 PDUs into their next PDU cycle. These PDUs must have been earned in the last year of the cycle.
  • Slide is self-explanatory.
  • These are tips from Herman Walter, who passed the PMP exam in August 2001.
  • Slide is self-explanatory.
  • These are references that Herman Walter used during his preparation for the exam. These recommendations are his and should not be considered as an endorsement by PMI or the Assembly of Chapter Presidents.
  • See slide 30 for disclaimer.
  • See slide 30 for disclaimer. Many people feel that Kerzner is too theoretical and that his views are in conflict with PMI’s. However, just as many people view him as the authority on project management. It will be up to the individual to decide. Project Management IQ questions and answers are based largely on Kerzner’s book.
