Applications are invited for admission in September 2007 to programmes leading to the part-time degree of Master of Science in Engineering in the fields of Building Services Engineering Electrical and Electronic Engineering Environmental Engineering Geotechnical Engineering Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management Infrastructure Project Management Mechanical Engineering Structural Engineering Transportation Engineering Application form and information on the curricula are attached. Some departments offer a mode of study that enables a full-time candidate to complete in one year. Applications can be submitted in a hard-copy format (forms can be downloaded from the website of the University of Hong Kong at http://www.hku.hk/rss/pp2007) or via our on-line application system at http://www.hku.hk/rss/online. Mode and Duration of Study 2. For the part-time mode of study, the curriculum shall extend over not less than two and not more than three academic years of study. For the full-time mode of study, the curriculum shall extend over not less than one and not more than two academic years of study. A minimum of 300 hours of prescribed work are required. Patterns of Study 3. There are two patterns of study: (a) Taught courses only: A candidate shall select twelve modules of study; a minimum of eight modules shall be selected from the syllabuses of the candidate's approved field of study. (b) Taught courses plus project: A candidate shall select eight modules of study; a minimum of five modules from the syllabuses of the candidate's approved field of study; and a project report or dissertation on a subject within his approved field of study. Entry Qualifications 4. Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree of this University, or equivalent qualifications. Description of Curriculum Building Services Engineering 5. The curriculum provides advanced education and training in the theory and practice of building services engineering. The curriculum offers part-time mode of study only. Electrical and Electronic Engineering 6. The curriculum provides advanced education and training in the theory, methods and techniques in electronics and computer engineering. The course covers topics such as data communication, application of microprocessors, industrial digital control, advanced digital signal processing, software engineering and other advanced topics. The curriculum offers both full-time and part-time modes of study. Some courses in this programme are approved for reimbursement from the Continuing Education Fund (CEF). Environmental Engineering 7. The curriculum provides advanced education in the field of Water and Environmental Engineering. Candidates are permitted to proceed only on a course of study under the pattern stated in item 3(b) above. The curriculum offers both full-time and part-time modes of study. Some courses in this programme are approved for reimbursement from the Continuing Education Fund (CEF).
  2. 2. Geotechnical Engineering 8. The curriculum provides advanced education in the field of Geotechnical Engineering. Candidates are permitted to proceed only on a course of study under the pattern stated in item 3(b) above. The curriculum offers both full-time and part-time modes of study. Some courses in this programme are approved for reimbursement from the Continuing Education Fund (CEF). Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management 9. The curriculum provides advanced education and training in the philosophy, methods and techniques of industrial and logistics management that are appropriate to the manufacturing, logistics and service industries. It covers engineering project management, organization theory, ergonomics, operational research, enterprise logistics, supply management, global logistics, supply chain management, terminal and warehousing, costing and finance, and concurrent engineering. The curriculum offers both full-time and part-time modes of study. Some courses in this programme are approved for reimbursement from the Continuing Education Fund (CEF). Infrastructure Project Management 10. The curriculum provides advanced education in the Management of Infrastructure Projects over their entire life cycle. Candidates are permitted to proceed only on a course of study under the pattern stated in item 3(b) above. The curriculum offers both full-time and part-time modes of study. Some courses in this programme are approved for reimbursement from the Continuing Education Fund (CEF). Mechanical Engineering 11. The curriculum provides advanced education in the fields of energy and power; materials technology; theoretical mechanics; environmental engineering; marine and offshore engineering; and computer aided design and manufacturing. The curriculum offers both full-time and part-time modes of study. Full-time candidates are required to proceed only on a course of study under the pattern stated in item 3(b) above. Some courses in this programme are approved for reimbursement from the Continuing Education Fund (CEF). Structural Engineering 12. The curriculum provides advanced education in the field of Structural Engineering. Candidates are permitted to proceed only on a course of study under the pattern stated in item 3(b) above. The curriculum offers both full-time and part-time modes of study. Some courses in this programme are approved for reimbursement from the Continuing Education Fund (CEF). Transportation Engineering 13. The curriculum provides advanced education in the field of Transportation Engineering. Candidates are permitted to proceed only on a course of study under the pattern stated in item 3(b) above. The curriculum offers both full-time and part-time modes of study. Some courses in this programme are approved for reimbursement from the Continuing Education Fund (CEF). Regulations and Syllabuses 14. The closing dates for MSc(Eng) programmes are: First round: March 15, 2007 Second round: April 30, 2007 [Applications received after the deadline may still be accepted and considered, subject to availability of places.] Fee 16. Infrastructure Project Management Mechanical Engineering Structural Engineering Transportation Engineering The composition fee for the project, which is equivalent to four modules of study, shall be payable in four instalments, unless otherwise stated, with each instalment paid in each semester. Students who can complete the project before the project fee has been paid in full should settle the balance of project fee upon completion of the project. Students are required to pay the composition fee for modules they enrol by semester. The project is compulsory for students in the MSc(Eng) programmes in Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Infrastructure Project Management, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Transportation Engineering. Students in the above six programmes are required to enrol in the project immediately upon admission. Full-time students of the above six programmes are required to pay the composition fee for the project in two instalments with each instalment paid in each semester of the first year of study.
