Introduction to the essentials of project management and the project life cycle. Topics include project
lifecycle management, and all project processes including: project charter, network diagramming,
scope management, cost management, risk management, issue management, change management,
scheduling and schedule management.
The course goal is to prepare students to have a broad understanding of project management in Health
Informatics so that they are adequately prepared to discuss, to participate in project teams, and to
perform specific project management tasks, which arise in the health care organizations (HCOs).

• The triple constraint of project management
• The project management knowledge areas and process groups
• The project life cycle
• Tools and techniques of project management, such as:
• Project selection methods
• Work breakdown structures
• Network diagrams, critical path analysis, and critical chain scheduling
• Cost estimates
• Earned value management
• Leadership, motivation theory and team building
3. Apply project management concepts by working on a group project as a project manager or
active team member.
4. Use Microsoft Project 2003 and other software to help plan and manage a small project.
5. Appreciate the importance of good project management.
• Share examples of good and bad project management.
• Keep a journal throughout the course for personal reflection.
• Use knowledge and skills developed in this class in other settings.
Course Teaching Techniques:
Traditional lecture methods will be supplemented with shared student learnings through individual and
group presentation. Assignments will be identified for both the lecture and lab components.

The class will actively participate in deciding what presentations and projects they will do. Each
student should decide on his or her individual presentations and team projects by the third week of
class. Feedback will be provided by instructor, self assessment and peers throughout the course.
Students are expected to actively participate in class by asking questions and sharing personal
experiences. This will be a collaborative learning experience.
Developing presentation skills is important for everyone, and it’s a good way to share information.
Each student will prepare and present one individual presentation and help with the group project
presentations. The individual presentations must include at least three outside references that are
documented in footnotes and a reference page. Students should hand in a hard copy of their
presentation notes, including a bibliography, or include the information in their handouts/visuals if they
plan to use any. Potential topics will be brainstormed in class. Presentations will be evaluated on
content, delivery, and audience response.
The purpose of the group project (3-5 people per group) is to use a structured approach to project
management in a team setting. As a class, select projects (or running cases), groups, and group project
managers. Each group will hand in a project notebook at the end of the term and prepare a project Web
site to facilitate communications and for progress reports throughout the project. Fifty percent of the
grade for the group project will be based on the group’s progress reports, final presentation, and Web
site, and 50 percent will be based on the project notebook. Group project managers will earn a small
amount of extra credit for successfully leading their project teams.

All laboratory and/or class assignments must be completed and both the mid-term and final exams
written in order to pass the course. Laboratory and/or class assignments handed in late will normally
be given a mark of 0 but must be completed to pass the course. The mid-term examination will include
lecture and reading material to the date of the exam. The final examination will cover all of the course
Any assignments submitted on disk MUST be scanned for computer viruses using the current detection
software provided in the HSD Computing Facility IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO SUBMISSION TO
Students in the program are expected to recognize the value of backing up important computer files.
Hardware and/or software failures or disasters will not, consequently, be accepted as valid reasons for
missing or late assignments.
In order to pass a course, students must pass the final exam and have a cumulative pass mark in the
term's laboratory and assignment work.
The final exam of students with missing assignments will not be marked until all work has been turned
in. No assignment will be accepted after five working days from the last day of classes. All such
assignments will be considered late unless other arrangements have been made with the instructor.
The School does not normally allow supplemental examinations.
Cooperative learning is encouraged in all HINF courses and it is one of the goals of most courses
to encourage cooperative problem solving skills. However students should be aware that multiple
individuals handing in the same answers will only be accepted in papers and projects designated
by the instructor to be group or team assignments.
Students choosing to submit shared work on individual assignments will have the marks for the
answer shared across all participants. If in the opinion of the instructor a similar/identical
response is submitted by say four individuals, each of the four students would receive 1/4 of the
grade given to the paper. Hence if the paper was given a grade of 80%, each of the four students
would be given a grade of 20%.
