  • Now lets consider the environment in which the solution is to work: Basically, we need to integrate spatial capabilities at every tier of an N-tier application: We need to integrate business and spatial data in the database: We can use Oracle Spatial for this. We need to provide spatial functions for viewing, editing, querying, etc in the application server – This can be on an Oracle 9iAS Application Server We also need to support a variety of user interfaces and devices, including: web applications And Desktop / Windows-style applications These latter must cover mobile use, which may be offline or occasionally connected It is also likely to be necessary to interface with other enterprise applications such as ERP systems, And possibly to legacy GIS implementations, e.g. to obtain base maps to display We needed tools to build and deploy spatial applications that support all of these cases.
