POSITION DESCRIPTION Job Title: Information Technology Officer Organisation School of Economics Unit: Reference 112233 Number: Type of Continuing Full-Time Employment: Classification: HEW Level 6 Remuneration: A salary package consisting of: Salary ranging from $53,355 to $557,495 per annum, plus employer superannuation of up to 17%. Appointments on a short term contract basis qualify for 9% of employer contribution. For staff entitled to 17% employer contributions, UniSuper does not mandate a level of member contribution to superannuation. However, in order to receive the full standard range of benefits under UniSuper, the member must pay 7% contribution from their salary (or a salary sacrifice equivalent contribution of 8.25%). It will be assumed that a 7% member contribution will apply unless the member formally notifies UniSuper of a decision of pay a lesser member contribution (or no member contribution). The School of Economics is a premier provider of undergraduate and postgraduate education in economics in Australia. ( For a comprehensive guide to family friendly work practices and services visit the Work and Family web site at DUTY STATEMENT Primary Purpose of Position To maintain IT services and perform related administrative functions for the School under the direction of the Executive Officer. Duties Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  Plan, establish, and manage the Economics IT facilities, services and activities to support teaching, research and business processes (includes associated devices eg printers, scanners, plotters, external devices such as disk drives).  Manage and maintain Economics servers.  In collaboration with the Executive Officer, Head of School, Chair of the Research Committee and Course Coordinators, coordinate IT operations to ensure effective support for teaching, research and administration.  Provide advice to the Executive Officer, Head of School and Chair of the Equipment Committee on new technology associated with IT, with a view to enhancing the School’s investment in infrastructure and internet services.  Consult with Executive Officer and Chair of the Equipment Committee to prepare an annual IT budget, based on a planned replacement cycle for all IT equipment.  Plan for use of resources and recommend capacity planning for systems.  Maintain all computing operations, ensuring secure and reliable service, and ongoing technical support relating to software for staff and postgraduates in the School.  Promote a high standard of customer service, taking action to ensure client requests are responded to promptly and effectively  Ensure technical security, maintenance, restoration and archiving data files and associated functions for Economics.  Ensure regular back-ups of servers and files are undertaken.  Maintain central Exchange Mail Infrastructure for the School in the Exchange System Management Tools.  Liaise with UQ Information Technology Services network support, software licensing and other units within UQ.  Install software and maintain licensing and other relevant user documentation.  Assist academic and general staff of School with software queries relating to Windows, Apple and Unix applications.  Implement procedures as directed to complete the annual audit of School equipment holdings and maintenance of the School’s Asset Register.  Assist in other activities of the School as required. SELECTION CRITERIA Qualifications Essential  Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology plus subsequent relevant experience or
  3. 3. an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training. Knowledge and Skills Essential  Breadth of general computing and network knowledge including PC, Macintosh and networking environments.  Experience in providing support to operating systems and applications (in particular MS Office) in several of the following environments: Windows 9x/NT/2K/XP/Vista, Macintosh OSX.  Ability and willingness to undergo training to learn skills needed to install and maintain new software and hardware acquired by the school. Desirable  Knowledge and understanding of UNIX, ITIL Processes, OS-X and Linux systems.  Possession of Microsoft and/or Apple certification  Ability to program using scripting Languages  Analytical and problem solving ability with experience in finding client focused solutions. Experience Essential  At least 2 year experience in IT support. Personal Qualities Essential  Excellent client and high level oral communication skills including the ability to communicate at all levels of an organisation in both technical and non-technical terms, supporting a wide variety of client information needs.  Good documentation skills.  Strong organisations skills, eg job tracking, prioritising and working under pressure.  Flexibility and ability to work both unsupervised and as a member of a team.
