  • 3. Editing Programs This paper will cover four different editing programs from television editing to audio editing. The four editing programs that will be discussed are Final Cut Express, Final Cut Pro HD, Final Draft, and Pro Tools LE. Each section will include an overview of the program and the features it contains. Along with the discussion graphics will be included to be able to see the difference and get a sense of each program. Overview of Editing Programs Editing programs are computer software programs that are used to edit video data or sound data. These programs enable you to “go through your captured video clips, isolate the best images and scenes, and then edit them together into completed video productions with video effects and transitions, background music and titles” (www.internetvideomag.com). Editing programs have been developing and changing dramatically in the past couple decades and will continue to change for a long time in the future as we continue into such a technological area. There are different types of editing programs. There are video editing software, audio software, screenwriting software, and photo editing software, among many others. Editing programs range from professional to beginner users so there is always something for every one to use and very often they come with a tutorial to learn about the program. As you get more experienced with the programs there are upgrades and more in-depth programs to buy. The cost of editing programs range from around $100 to over $1,000 depending on the type and how advanced the program is.
  • 4. Page 4 Final Cut Express Final Cut Express is an advanced DV editing software. This program is made for Power Mac G5 and Mac OS X panther. This editing program was designed to accommodate beginners, aspiring filmmakers, and experienced editors. It’s new features includes an “RT extreme for real-time compositing and effects, an enhanced user interface, real-time color correction tools and enhanced audio editing capabilities” (www.apple.com/finalcutexpress). Final Cut Express can be used for home videos with special effects with transitions and sound. It can also be used for pro-level videos for a business or for television broadcasting. The program has many new features that allow you to create any piece of work easily and make it look like it was done by a professional. Final Cut Express is priced at $299 which is a more affordable version of other Final Cut products. Final Cut Express is used at Quinnipiac University in the Media Production courses and is also used by many television stations. Learning on them for courses at Quinnipiac is a great experience for the student’s careers. On www.apple.com/finalcutexpress they created a list of the Top 10 features of Final Cut Express. The first on the list is the plug in and go with your miniDV camcorder and firewire. Final Cut Express communicates with the firewire which is a built in port on the Mac computers. This allows you to plug in the camcorder and use things like fast forward, reverse, stop or play. Because the firewire and the program communicate correctly it makes it easier to plug in the camcorder and start editing.
  • 5. Page 5 The second item on the list is Non-destructive, Non-linear Editing. The non-linear editing does not set up the clips from the camcorder in our so you don’t have to worry about their position in time. The non-destructive part allows you to edit and not have to worry about the actual footage because it does not get touched as you edit. The third item on the list is transitions, filters, and effects with real-time previewing. Final Cut Express comes with over 200 transitions, filters, and effects. Some of these include dissolves, blurs, borders, keying effects and many more. The rest of the top 10 features are advanced titling, in-canvas compositing with motion key frames, multi-layered photoshop file support, multiple projects and sequences, the voiceover tool, advanced color correction, and markers. Final Cut Express has hundreds of great features and is offered at an affordable price which makes it a very popular choice by many people. Final Cut Pro HD Final Cut Pro HD is one of the newest editions of the Final Cut programs. “Final Cut Pro HD offers industry-leading scalability and performance. Now you can capture DVCPRO HD over FireWire, edit in camera-native format and output over FireWire without generational quality loss. RT Extreme, now optimized for HD, makes it possible to add filters, effects, transitions and composite multiple streams of HD video in real-time” (www.apple.com/finalcutpro.com). This program is a little more advanced then the Final Cut Express but can still be used by beginners and can be used for many different types of projects. This new program was made to include the new technological advancement of the high definition televisions. This program is used by

This program also allows you to work over the firewire as did the Final Cut Express. Final Cut Pro HD also allows you to speed up, slow down, reverse, etc. over time without rendering. It includes many new effect features including improved trimming tools, high quality titles, new soundtrack tools, and animated fonts. Final Cut Pro HD allows you to integrate with other systems easily and the hundreds of keyboard short cuts makes your work go faster. This program costs $999 or $399 for an upgrade. This program strives on the fact that is “offers professional editing, compositing, effects and audio capabilities to help you create high-impact imagery while meeting your most demanding post production deadlines, is a powerful solution for creating high- quality programming in a broad range of formats, frame rates and resolutions and it’s standards-based architecture enables integration with virtually any production pipeline” (www.apple.com/finalcutpro). Pro Tools LE Pro Tools LE is an editing program used for audio. “With its matchless combination of flexibility, power, and simplicity, Pro Tools software has become the industry standard for audio production” (www.digidesign.com). Pro Tools LE is also used at Quinnipiac University in the Media Production courses. It has the best input and output quality of any software of its type and managing all the different audio files at one time is made easy. With two windows open you can mix music and enables you to go back and forth between many
  • 7. Page 7 projects without losing the mixing settings. With only one window open all the editing tools are available to do a number of things including tweaking the sound, rearranging sound sections, replace a drum beat, plus many other editing effects. Plug-ins are also an important part of Pro Tools LE, the plug-ins are add on software tools that allow you to adjust the dynamics of the audio. The compatibility of Pro Tools LE is anther key feature. Anything that you create can easily be moved between windows and Macintosh bases programs. Pro Tools LE offers everything you need to compose, record, edit, and mix your projects. This program costs $300 dollars and $150 for an upgrade. Final Draft “Final Draft, the number-one selling word processor specifically designed for writing movie scripts, television episodics and stage plays, combines powerful word processing with professional script formatting in one self-contained, easy-to-use package” (www.finaldraft.com). This program makes it simple to format a script so you will not have to learn all the rules for formatting. As you write it automatically formats the script into the correct standards. Final Draft scripts are the same for Windows and Macintosh so it is easy to change from one to the other. The import/export process is made simple without having to re-type the whole script. It includes over 50 television show, movie and play templates with characters and locations and you can even have the entire script read back to you by the computer. Final Draft has a script comparer which highlights changes in scripts so its easy to see the difference and also has script notes that pop up with ideas and suggestions as you write. Many famous screenwriters, directors, and producers use
