DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION and EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

  1. 1. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION and EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT ICT Professional Learning Intel® Teach 2009 Master Trainer Application The Intel® Teach Program is a professional learning program for classroom teachers. Under the umbrella of the Intel Teach program, two courses are currently offered. They are the Essentials Online course and the Thinking with Technology course. This application can be used for either the course. Please read the following information carefully. Essentials Online Course Description The Essentials Online course is a hybrid of face-to-face and facilitated online course work. It focuses on curriculum planning which is driven by an inquiry model and an emphasis on higher-order thinking skills, integrates the use of a range of ICT and is based on the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). Participants work in a secure online environment to plan curriculum, develop assessments and communication and collaborate with their peers. They are supported throughout by an online facilitator who will provide ongoing support and feedback throughout the course. Requirements 1. Master Trainer: This teacher will complete three days of face-to-face training, including training on how to set up and facilitate their own course. The Master Trainer is then required to deliver the Participant Training course with a minimum of 10 Participant Teachers following the course structure. The Master Trainer course is 36 hours (includes four hours of training as an online facilitator. 2. Participant Training: A number of delivery models are available for the Participant Training to ensure the needs of the participants are met. At least one full day of face to face training is required at the beginning of the course, and can be followed by a second full day or two after school sessions. The delivery of the remaining modules can be done completely online, face to face after school or a combination of both. Participant Teachers should have a basic level of ICT competence. The Participant training course is 32 hours. Thinking With Technology Course Description The Intel® Teach Thinking with Technology Course is 24 to 40 hours of hands- on, face-to-face professional development. Focused on building effective technology integration skills, Thinking with Technology uses free online thinking tools to sharpen students' higher-order thinking. Like the Essentials Online course, it focuses on curriculum planning which is driven by an inquiry model and an emphasis on higher-order thinking skills, integrates the use of a range of ICT and is based on the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). Participants develop their own Teaching and Learning taxonomy and skills in the use of three online thinking tools – Visual Ranking, Seeing Reason and Showing Evidence as well as two online resources that support productivity (Assessing Projects and Intel® Education Help Guide). Requirements: 1. Master Trainer (MT) Training: This teacher will receive 32 to 40 hours (four to five days) of face-to-face training. The Master Trainer is then required to deliver the Participant Teacher Training course with a minimum of 10 Participant Teachers following the course structure. -1-
  2. 2. Intel Teach Program 2008 Master Trainer Application Form 2 Participant Teacher Training: Master Trainers, in consultation with their Principal, can elect to train participant teachers in one, two or all three of the online thinking tools, with the course options varying from 24 to 40 hours. i. Visual Ranking only (6 modules, 4 hours per module = approx. 24 hours) ii. Visual Ranking and Seeing Reason (8 modules, 4 hours per module = approx. 32 hours) iii. Visual Ranking and Showing Evidence (8 modules, 4 hours per module = approx. 32 hours) iv. Visual Ranking, Seeing Reason and Showing Evidence 10 modules, 4 hours per module = approx. 40 hours) Participant Teachers should have a basic level of ICT competence. Information for Applicants and Principals Master Trainers provide intensive ICT professional learning to their colleagues. A high quality Master Trainer should: • Be a good classroom teacher, with strong pedagogical understandings • Have expertise in delivering professional learning to staff • Have strong organisational and time management skills and capable of maintaining a supportive learning environment for colleagues • Be a proficient user of ICT • Be working at or near the Innovative level for Learning & Teaching, Assessment and Reporting and ICT Professional Learning of the ePotential ICT Teacher Capabilities Matrix. Implementation of Participant Teacher Training In order to maximise the success and positive impact on student learning that the course offers, principals are asked to consider how they can best support implementation of the Intel Teach course in their school. The following guiding questions may assist: • How can the face-to-face training be supported eg. Curriculum day(s) allocation, internal time- tabling arrangements, CRT release? • Will any of the modules of the course be completed in the Participant Teachers’ own time? If so, what support might be possible? • How could the school-wide meeting schedule/professional learning schedule be used to accommodate Participant Teacher training? • What support can be offered to the Master Trainer as they facilitate the course? Essentials Online course only: • Which delivery model (e.g. Fully face to face, hybrid face to face and online) will work best for your teachers given their current ICT skill and pedagogy and school-wide curriculum planning processes • What leverage from the completion of the Essentials Online course in terms of the introduction of the Ultranet and planning for future professional learning?
  3. 3. Intel Teach Program 2008 Master Trainer Application Form Potential Benefits to the School • Support for whole school change by providing a common ‘language’ for curriculum planning • Provides a context for participants to critically reflect on their current curriculum planning processes and the way in which 21st century skills, higher order thinking and the integration of ICT are planned and assessed in a student-centred classroom • Enables participants to develop deeper understanding of formative and summative assessment throughout the curriculum planning process • Enables participants to develop or enhance their ICT skills and understanding of the potential of Web 2.0 technologies • Builds teacher capacity at school level, with Master Trainers as mentors to support school-based development Please provide details of Applicants selected from your school to attend the Intel Teach Master Trainer Program. This program requires the Master Trainer to train colleagues back at school. It is recommended that schools train two Master Trainers to maximise the potential for delivering the course at a whole school level.
