  • 1. Connecting to the World Wide Web using YSU PPP on the Macintosh To connect your Macintosh to YSU Point to Point (PPP) using this document you must first be using Mac OS 8.0 or later. All iMac, iBook, PowerBook G3, Power Macintosh G3, G4, and G4 Cube computers are pre-equipped with one of these Mac OS versions. If your Macintosh is not listed above, please follow these instructions to identify which version of the Mac OS you are currently using. Before you begin you must… 1. have an active UNIX1 account. 2. have a working modem connected to a functional phone line. 3. identify your system. System Identifiers: ! Mac OS 8 - 9.0.4: These versions will have a multi-colored Apple Menu in the top left hand corner of the screen. Please follow the instructions from page 1 to page 3 for setting up Mac OS 8 - 9.0.4. for YSU PPP. ! Mac OS X: This version will have the word Desktop at the top right-hand corner of the screen. Please follow the instructions from page 4 to page 6 for setting up Mac OS X to YSU PPP. Mac OS 8.0 - 9.0.4 Step 1: Move your cursor to the Apple menu at the top-left hand corner of your screen. Click and hold your mouse button and drag your cursor to the Control Panels folder and release the button. Help Desk Version 10102000 1
  • 2. This will open a window so you can access all of your Control Panels needed to set your Macintosh up for YSU PPP. Step 2: Move your cursor to an icon that says , and double-click on it. You should see a window similar to the one below. In this window, you will be required to select the port in which your modem is installed and the type of modem connected to your computer. Make sure you set Connect via: to the port your modem is connected to. For most new Macintosh computers, this is pre-selected and cannot be changed. Next, select the modem installed in your Macintosh next to the word Modem: Click the close box in the upper left hand corner of the window and click save to save your changes to the Modem Control Panel. Step 3: Move your cursor to an icon in your Control Panels folder called and double-click. You should see a window similar to the one below. Help Desk Version 10102000 2
  • 3. In this box, you need to be sure Connect via: is set to PPP. If it isn’t, you need to select PPP as your connection type. Next is the Configure: option. You need to set this option to Using PPP Server as shown in the diagram above. Thirdly will be your Name Server Addresses. Simply type in 150.134.10.1, hit return, and enter the second series of numbers 150.135.50.4. Click the close box in the left-hand corner of the window and click save in the dialog box to save your changes. Step 4: Move your cursor to the icon that says (PPP in Mac OS 8) and double-click on it. You should see a window similar to the one below. Help Desk Version 10102000 3
  • 4. In this window, three settings shown labeled in black circles need information given to you on your UNIX account application sheet. Under the heading Name:, you will need to enter your UNIX logon name found on your UNIX application. Once this has been typed in, you can enter the password you had chosen for your UNIX account. Finally, the number for the YSU PPP server will need to be added. The number is 330-480-8529. Click the close box in the left-hand corner of the window and click save in the dialog box to save your settings. Users can quickly activate their YSU PPP accounts by holding the Option and Apple-Command keys and clicking and dragging the Remote Access (PPP in Mac OS 8) Control Panel to the Desktop and releasing the mouse button then the keys. From here you can double-click the icon on the Desktop and click the Connect button to connect you to the Internet or Disconnect to leave the Internet. Closing your web browser does not disconnect you from the Internet, it must be done using the Remote Access or PPP icon on your Desktop. Mac OS X Public Beta Step 1: At the desktop, move your cursor down to the bottom of your screen so that you can see the icons on your dock. Click once on the far left icon that says Desktop as shown in the picture below. Step 2: Depending on where you left off before, your window may be slightly different than the one in our example at the bottom of this paragraph. However, you will need to locate the folder called Applications and double-click on it. Help Desk Version 10102000 4
  • 5. Step 3: Move your cursor to the PPP Connect icon and double-click. You should get the PPP Connect window as shown below. These settings below will help you enter your server and account information. -Phone Number: 330-480-8529 -Name: Your UNIX username found on your UNIX application. (e.g. s0000000) -Password: The password to your UNIX account. -DNS Addresses (Domain Name Servers): 150.134.10.1 and 150.134.50.4 -Domain Name: ysu.edu Step 4: Move your cursor to the PPP Connect menu in the top left hand corner of your screen, click and hold the mouse button, then drag down to Preferences and release the mouse button. A window similar to the one below will appear. In this window you will need to click and hold on the selectable menu next to Modem Type: and select the modem currently installed in your Macintosh.   • 6. Step 5: Next to be changed is the Modem Port. Click on the selectable menu next to Modem Port: as shown in the picture below. From here you want to select which port your modem is installed on. All modems inside the computer will be on port Internal Modem. Modems outside the computer will be installed on either the USB or FireWire port. When finished, click the OK button to close the PPP Preferences window. Then click the red close box in top left corner of the PPP Connect box. Step 6: In this step, click and drag the PPP Connect icon from the Applications folder to your dock at the bottom of your screen. This is not required, however, it will allow you to connect and disconnect from the Internet much easier than finding the Applications folder every time. The picture below will give you a better idea of what to click and drag to the dock. Help Desk Version 10102000 6
  • 7. Step 7: Once you drag your PPP Connect icon to the dock, click once on it until the PPP Connect window pops up. There will be a Connect button at the far right corner of the window. Click it to connect to YSU’s PPP server. After dialing and authentication of your username and password, you will see a box similar to the one below. This means you have successfully connected to YSU’s Internet server! To access the web, just open a web browser located on your dock. The default web browser for Mac OS X is Microsoft Internet Explorer. If you need assistance with setting up your PPP connection, please call the YSU Help Desk at 330-742-1595.
